Historical Background
Section 61 instructed those traveling with Joseph Smith to travel quickly but to preach along the way and spread the glad tidings of the Restoration. This the men did. When they arrived in Chariton, Missouri, that were delighted to find members of the Church who had been in Independence: Hyrum Smith, John Murdock, David Whitmer, and Harvey Whitlock, who were on their way to Independence. Joseph sought for and received additional guidance for the brethren headed toward Western Missouri. That guidance is contained in this revelation. The group Joseph was with, consisting of himself and ten other men, continued on to Kirtland, Ohio, arriving on the 27th of August 1831. Thus, the trip Joseph and his associates took from Kirtland to Independence and back, with conferences in July to reveal the location of the New Jerusalem and other important matters, took three months.

The missionaries who had been called from Ohio to preach the gospel in Missouri had received instructions concerning their return to Ohio (see D&C 60). They did not all return together. The Prophet Joseph led a group of ten men (Ezra Booth, Reynolds Cahoon, Joseph Coe, Oliver Cowdery, Sidney Gilbert, William W. Phelps, Sidney Rigdon, Samuel H. Smith, Peter Whitmer, Jr., and Frederick G. Williams) back to Kirtland. They traveled by canoe. After two days in the Missouri River there was an accident. The canoe Joseph and Sidney Rigdon were riding in ran into a tree that had become lodged in the river. The canoe was tipped over and those riding in it were nearly drowned. The party elected to camp for a time at a place called McIlwaine’s Bend, about 100 miles from Independence, Missouri. As they were camped, the Lord gave the Prophet Joseph a revelation concerning “the waters.”

Historical Background
Fourteen two-man teams of missionaries were called from Ohio to preach the gospel in Missouri (see D&C 52). Those who made the trip to Missouri, preached along the way, and when they arrived in Missouri they along with those who were already there were taught. The place for the New Jerusalem was revealed and instructions were given concerning those who would remain in Missouri. Section 60 contains instruction for the Ohio missionaries who were about to return to their homes.
D&C 60:1-4 With Some I Am Not Well Pleased

Why would the Lord say that missionaries should shake the dust off their feet “as a testimony against” persons who reject their testimony?

The Saints who had traveled from Ohio and Colesville, New York, were anxious to receive instructions from the Lord. They had come expecting to build the New Jerusalem. The Lord, in this revelation, gives them the rules they were to live by. One day prior to this revelation being received, Sister Polly Knight, wife of Joseph Knight, Sr., passed away. Joseph Smith had lived with the Knight family in Colesville. They had shown him great kindness for many years. Of the passing of his wife, Joseph Knight, Sr., wrote: “Joseph [Smith] and Sidney [Rigdon] and a number of the brethren came. And they looked out and entered a considerable land for the people to settle on. We found it a new county with some settlers on it. There was one Joshua Lewis that had come into the Church the winter before, he and his wife. And they were faithful and good to us and took us into their house, my wife being sick as before stated. She died the seventh day of August, and Joseph and Sidney attended her funeral on the eighth. She was buried in the woods [at] a spot chosen, and by ourselves. I was along by where she was buried a few days after. And I found the pigs had begun to root where she was buried. I being very unwell. But I took my ax the next day and went and built a pen around it. It was the last I done for her” (Dean Jesse, “Joseph Knight’s Recollections of Early Mormon History,” Brigham Young University Studies 16 (Autumn 1976): 29-39; spelling and punctuation standardized).
This revelation was received the day Polly Knight passed away.

The promise was made that if those who were invited were faithful to that commandment, the location of the New Jerusalem would be revealed. Section 52 was received in June. Church members started arriving in July. The location for the New Jerusalem and the place for the temple were revealed. Now the question became, what is the next step? Section 58 is the beginning of that answer.
D&C 58:1-13 Be Faithful in Tribulation
In verses 1-5, the Lord prepares the Saints for difficult times ahead. Find the word “tribulation” in these verses. What does the Lord want the Saints to know about tribulation? In verses 6-13, the Lord lists reasons why the Saints were asked to come to Missouri. List at least three reasons the Lord gives for gathering the Saints to this area. How are these reasons similar to the reasons that we gather people into the Church today?

Edward Partridge was the first bishop of the Church. His calling might be compared to the Presiding Bishop of the Church today. How do verses 30-33 help us understand why some of the Lord’s promises to his children are not fulfilled? As you examine your own life, can you see why the Lord has fulfilled his promises to you? Why have some promises been left unfulfilled?

The remaining verses in this revelation give specific instruction to individual members of the Church. Examine the instructions given to Martin Harris (verses 34-39), William W. Phelps (verses 40-43), the elders who came from Ohio (verses 44-49), Sidney Rigdon (verses 50-57), The First Presidency (verses 58-59), Ziba Peterson (verse 60), the elders who came from Ohio (verses 60-65). As you look at the specific instructions you will find principles that apply to all members today. Which ones seem to apply specifically to you? Memorize D&C 58:42-43.

Doctrine and Covenants Section 57
Historical Background
Section 52 designated that 14 pairs of missionaries leave for Missouri. This revelation was given in early June, 1831. By mid-June the Prophet Joseph Smith and other leaders of the Church began their journey. They traveled by wagon to Cincinnati, Ohio; then by wagon, canal boat, and stage to Louisville, Kentucky; then by steamer to St. Louis, Missouri; and on foot from St. Louis to Independence, Missouri ( a distance of 242 miles). The trip took approximately one month. There was a joyous reunion. Joseph Smith and Oliver Cowdery, together with their associates, had not seen each other in many weeks. Joseph said the gathering was “moistened with many tears” (Times and Seasons, 15 February 1844). The promise of the Lord was that when these missionaries had gathered He would reveal the location of the New Jerusalem and the place where the temple of that city was to be built.
D&C 57:1-5 The Center Place of the City of Zion
As you read these verses, think of what it must have meant to the Church members who had sacrificed all that they had to come to Missouri. Remember what the scriptures said about the New Jerusalem (see Ether 13:2-11; Revelation 21:10-27; Moses 7:62-64). These verses speak of “the line running directly between Jew and Gentile” (57:4). Remember that the Prophet Joseph sent missionaries to the Lamanites, the descendants of Lehi. Joseph saw the American Indians who lived near Western Missouri as descendants of Lehi, who came from Jerusalem and was therefore a Jew. The purpose of the Book of Mormon was “to the convincing of Jew and Gentile that JESUS is the CHRIST, the ETERNAL GOD, manifesting himself unto all nations” (see Title Page of the Book of Mormon). Throughout his ministry, the Prophet Joseph Smith had a special feeling about the American Indians because of this feeling that they were descended from the Jews.

In these verses, the Lord gives specific direction to Church leaders so that the Church might be established in Missouri. In verses 6-10 instructions are given to Sidney Gilbert and Edward Partridge. Historical Background
During the Church conference in June 1831, 14 pairs of missionaries had been called to travel from Kirtland to Missouri. (See D&C 52.) They were to preach as they traveled, take different routes, and hold another conference after their arrival. Thomas B. Marsh was assigned to travel with Ezra Thayer (see D&C 52:22). Ezra Thayer had property in Kirtland and was fearful that he would lose it while he was away. The Lord, by revelation to Brother Thayer, told him that Joseph Smith, Sr., would live on the property while Ezra was away. The revelation, never published, also indicated that Joseph, Sr., would have help from other members while Ezra was away. However, Brother Thayer did not leave on his mission. Therefore a new companion needed to be found for Brother Marsh. Newel Knight had been assigned to travel with Selah Griffin (see D&C 52:32). However, Brother Knight and his associates from Colesville, New York, were forced to leave the property owned by Leman Copley in Thompson, Ohio. Therefore, Brother Knight’s family had no where to live. So, Brother Knight was asked to move to Missouri with his family and associates from New York, thereby leaving Brother Griffin without a missionary companion. The solution to the problem was to have Brother Marsh and Brother Griffin serve together and travel to Missouri as a companionship.
D&C 56:1-13 The Lord Commands and Revokes
The Lord has a message to the whole Church (verses 1-4), to Thomas B. Marsh and Newel Knight (verses 5-7), and to Ezra Thayer (verses 8-11). Compare the messages given by the Lord to these three groups. In verses 12-13, what does the Lord say will determine the rewards of Church members? What important lessons do we learn about fulfilling Church assignments? How can this revelation help us understand why missionary assignments are changed, or adjusted?
D&C 56:14-20 A Message to the Rich and to the Poor
Compare what the Lord says to the rich (verses 14-16) and to the poor (verses 17-20). According to these verses, what is more important than wealth or poverty? How can this revelation help us continue to serve the Lord, no matter what our circumstances might be?

William W. Phelps arrived in Kirtland, Ohio, in early June 1831. For two years, prior to his arrival, he had been the editor of a newspaper called The Ontario Phoenix. When he arrived in Kirtland he was 39 years old and married to Sally Waterman. The revelation in this section is in response to Brother Phelps’ request to be involved in the work of the Restoration. It reveals what William’s role will be.

In these verses the word “ordained” is used not only to describe what happens when one receives the priesthood, but also to describe what happens when a member receives a specific assignment or “calling” in the Church. Historical Background
Joseph Knight, Jr., wrote: “We commenced preparing houses on a brother’s land [in Thompson, Ohio, not far from Kirtland] who had a thousand acres. My folks came on. They were called the Colesville church [being a congregation of members from Colesville, New York]. We planted and sowed a great deal. The man was turned out of the church for bad conduct. His name was Leman Copley. He then began to persecute us and we had to leave his farm and pay sixty dollars damage for fitting up his houses and planting his ground. We then had a revelation to go to the western line of the States” (Joseph Knight, Jr.; “Incidents of History: 1829-1844.”).

Some persons would seem to swoon away, and make unseemly gestures, and be drawn or disfigured in their countenances. Others would fall into ecstasies, and be drawn into contortions, cramps, fits, etc. Others would seem to have visions and revelations, which were not edifying, and which were not congenial to the doctrine and spirit of the gospel. In short, a false and lying spirit seemed to be creeping into the Church” (Autobiography of Parley P. Pratt, p. 61).
John Whitmer wrote, “Some had visions and could not tell what they saw, some would fancy to themselves that they had the sword of Laban, and would wield it as expert as a light dragon, some would act like an Indian in the act of scalping, some would slide or scoop on the floor, with the rapidity of a serpent, which they termed sailing in the boat to the Lamanites, preaching the gospel. And many other vain and foolish manoevers that are unseeming and unprofitable to mention. . . . These things grieved the servants of the Lord, and some conversed together on this subject, and others came in and we were at Joseph Smith, Jr., the Seer, and made it a matter of consultation, for many would not turn from their folly, unless God would give a revelation. The Prophet Joseph Smith told John Whitmer that he would be the historian for the Church. Brother Whitmer was not interested in such a calling, but he told Joseph that he would do it if it was the will of the Lord. Section 47 is the revelation requested by John Whitmer, telling him of his responsibility. He was set apart in April of 1831 and began writing in June. His assignment was to transcribe all things that had been revealed to the Prophet Joseph Smith. Even in these early days of the Church it would have been a massive undertaking. There is mention made in the revelation concerning another calling for Oliver Cowdery. It should be remembered that he already had the position of Second Elder (D&C 20:3); and, he had been called to preach the gospel to the Lamanites (D&C 28:8).

His assignment was to transcribe all things that had been revealed to the Prophet Joseph Smith. Even in these early days of the Church it would have been a massive undertaking. There is mention made in the revelation concerning another calling for Oliver Cowdery. It should be remembered that he already had the position of Second Elder (D&C 20:3); and, he had been called to preach the gospel to the Lamanites (D&C 28:8).
D&C 47:1-4 Callings in the Church
Read these verses and explain what they help us understand about callings in the Church. What calling did John Whitmer receive? What was he called to do? How long was he called to serve? What else did his calling allow him to do? Why was the person who held this calling released? What will he have to do to be successful? Why would it be important for John Whitmer to know these things? Why would it be important for anyone receiving a calling in the Church to know these things?

As they visited among themselves about various doctrines and practices the question of who could and could not attend Church meetings came up. In response to the differences of opinion on the matter, Joseph went to the Lord seeking direction. This revelation is the Lord’s answer to the question, Who may participate in Church meetings?
D&C 46:1-6 Conduct Meetings by the Holy Spirit
Find the word “meetings” in these verses. Read the words associated with meetings and list the principles that the Lord reveals concerning: how the meetings should be conducted, who may attend, who may partake of the sacrament, who may attend meetings were converts are being confirmed. Why should you know these principles? How has your life been affected by the idea that the Church has open meetings?
D&C 46:7-12 Gifts to Avoid Deception
According to verse 7, how should a person approach God to ask His help? What does verse 8 say we should beware of? How can we avoid deception? What does the Lord say about the gifts he has given us to avoid deception?

As you read the gifts of the Spirit found in these verses, ask yourself how each of these gifts or all of them together, would protect the members of the Church from being deceived. How have these gifts been a blessing to you and to those you love?

Doctrine and Covenants Section 45
Historical Background
On the 4th of March, 1831, a special conference of the Church was held in Kirtland, Ohio. Several Melchizedek priesthood holders attended the meeting and the invitation was extended to them to preach the gospel. This revelation gives them insight into why they should preach. Details surrounding the Second Coming of the Savior are given. This revelation became a catalyst for Joseph Smith to take a different direction in his translation of the Bible. Prior to this time, he had worked exclusively on an inspired revision of the book of Genesis, in the Old Testament. This revelation instructs Joseph to begin working on an inspired translation of the New Testament. He began working on this project on March 8th, the day after the revelation was given. In this effort he was assisted by Sidney Rigdon.
D&C 45:1-8 Listen to the Advocate
In these verses, the Lord answers such questions as who He is, what His purpose is, how He can help believers, what He has done, and how we may become the sons of God. What are the answers to these questions? Why would it be wise to follow His counsel?
D&C 45:9-15 God’s Everlasting Covenant
What does the word “it” stand for in verses 9, 10, 12, and 14. What is the “everlasting covenant” that the Lord has brought into the world? Cross-reference: Jeremiah 31:31-34; Ezekiel 37:15-28; D&C 1:17-23.

These verses represent an inspired expansion of information found in Matthew 24 of the New Testament. The topic is the Second Coming of Christ and the beginning of the Millennium. It is divided into four sections: The days of Christ’s original disciples (verses 16-25), the times of the Gentiles, or the days in which we now live (verses 26-35), the days just prior to the Second Coming (verses 36-47), and the Second Coming of Christ in glory (verses 48-59). Look at the verses in each section and pick out the event that is most important to you. What can you do to prepare yourself for the Second Coming of Christ? See verses 32, 35, 39, and 57.

By February 1831, many Saints had complied with the revelation or were in the process of making their move. Section 44 is the first revelation that calls for a conference of the Church (the fourth conference in its history) to be held in Ohio. This conference would be held on June 3rd, 1831. Many of the principles found in this revelation explain why we hold general conferences today.
