Moroni 7-10 Moroni's Final Testimony
Moroni, still alive and still possessing room on the plates, elects to finish his record with two letters from his father, Mormon. Mormon says that it is as easy to judge between good and evil as it is to judge between light and dark (see verse 15). What keys does Mormon give us to help us discern between good and evil? What is the light by which we should judge? (See verse 18.)
Moroni 7:20-48 How to lay hold upon every good thing
In the first half of Moroni 7, Mormon explained how to judge between good and evil. Now he will explain how, after having discerned that something is good, a person might hold on to good things. In verses 20-36, Mormon explains the relationship between faith, repentance, and miracles. What is that relationship? In verses 37-48, he explains the relationship between faith, hope and charity. What is that relationship? Moroni has seen the destruction of his people and recorded the destruction of the Jaredites. Why would he feel it was important for us to read the words of his father?
Moroni 8:1-30 Little Children Are Alive in Christ
Have students read these verses looking for the words “little children”. What does Mormon teach us concerning baptism and little children? According to verses 20-28, what is the danger of accepting the doctrine that little children must be baptized? Moroni has seen the destruction of his people and recorded the destruction of the Jaredites. Why would he feel it was important for us to read the words of his father?
Moroni 9:1-26 The Sufferings of the Unfaithful
Mormon says he cannot speak favorably to God concerning the Lamanites (see verse 21). Have students read verses 1-20 and list the reasons why Mormon would not desire to do this. What do we see about us today that would cause Mormon to say the same thing about us? According to Mormon’s counsel to Moroni in verses 21-26, what can we do so that prophets would feel like they could “recommend us to God”?
Moroni 10:1-34 Moroni’s Final Testimony
In these verses Moroni explains: 1) How to know the truth, 2) The gifts of the Spirit, 3) The relationship between faith, hope and charity (and this is the third time he has done it), 4) Why we should not deny the power of Christ. Have students find what Moroni said on these four subjects. Remind them of Moroni’s background and understanding. Why would a man who has watched and recorded the destruction of two civilizations remind us of these four things? How can understanding these four things keep our families and communities from destruction?
Moroni 1-6 Ordinances of Salvation
What seems to have caught Moroni by surprise? What things have happened in your life that are clearly the will of the Lord but have been a surprise to you?
Moroni 2-6 The Administration of the Church of Christ
Remind students that no where else in scripture up to this point in history had recorded these aspects of Church administration. No one had ever recorded how to bestow the gift of the Holy Ghost, how to ordain others to the priesthood, the words of the sacrament prayers, the conditions that had to be met for baptism and receiving the gift of the Holy Ghost, and how to conduct meetings of the Church. What would have happened if Moroni had assumed his mission was over after he abridged the Jaredite record? Why is it important that none of us ever feel like our mission or assignment in the kingdom of God is complete?
Ether 7-15 The Destruction of the Jaredites
The Jaredites desired that there should be a man who was named king over the people. The brother of Jared declared, “Surely this thing leadeth to captivity” (Ether 6:23). Invite the class to find the word captivity in Ether 7. Why do the Lord’s people become captives when they have someone other than the Lord for their king? Cross-reference: 1 Samuel 8:5-18.
Ether 8:20-23 Secret Combinations
Moroni revealed that secret combinations were established among the Jaredites to help the most wicked among them to gain power. Moroni issued a warning to the Gentiles concerning secret combinations. Have students read the warning in verses 20-23 and explain why we should not sustain those who are part of secret combinations.
Ether 9:35 The Jaredites humble themselves
There was gross wickedness among the Jaredites. They began to follow those who established secret combinations. There was murder and adultery and corruption of every sort. However, verse 35 indicates that the people repented. Invite students to read verses 30-34 and discover why it is that the people humbled themselves and repented. How does the Lord humble people in this generation?
Ether 10:22-28 Prosperity among the Jaredites
Have students read these verses and list the elements of prosperity among the Jaredites. Help students see that the prosperity of the Jaredites was a collective prosperity. No mention is made of individuals prospering, rather it is national prosperity. As soon as the Jaredites seek for individual prosperity through secret combinations they go into captivity (see verses 33-34).
Ether 11:13-23 The Final Destruction of the Jaredites Prophesied
What are the key words that describe the reasons why the Jaredites were headed for a final destruction? How do people show that they are wicked and rebellious in this generation? What is the difference between living in captivity and living in peace?
Ether 12:1-41 Faith, Hope and Charity
Moroni saw the destruction of the Jaredites. He also saw our day (see Mormon 8:35-41) and saw that we were headed in the same direction the Jaredites were headed. In Ether 12, Moroni attempts to give us a doctrinal framework within which to live our lives and avoid the promised destruction of the wicked. The first principle of that doctrinal framework is faith in Christ. Have students read verses 1-31 and find examples of faith among the Jaredites and Nephites. In those same verses the Lord explains why men receive weaknesses in this life. How do these weaknesses lead to an increase of faith? The second principle is hope. Have students read Ether 12:32 and explain why we must have hope. The third principle is charity. Have students read Ether 12:33-37 and explain why those who will not suffer destruction must have charity.
Ether 12:38-41 Moroni’s Testimony
Why does Moroni have confidence as he anticipates the day he will stand before God to be judged? What can we do to have that same confidence?
Ether 13:1-14 Ether Writes of a New Jerusalem
Ether wrote of the reconstruction of the Jerusalem that Lehi came from. He also wrote of a New Jerusalem. What did Ether see when he was shown the future? What does the scripture mean in verse 12? Who are the first and who are the last? Why is it important for us to know the prophecies of Ether?
Ether 13:1-15:34 The End of the Jaredites
Have students read Ether 14:25 and explain what the fullness of the wrath of God was that was poured out upon the Jaredites. Have students read Ether 15:3 and explain why Coriantumr began to repent after having resisted repentance for so long. Have students read Ether 15:19 and explain why the Spirit had ceased striving with the Jaredites. What lessons can we learn from this pattern?

Ether 1-6 Pentrating the Veil of Unbelief
Cross reference: Omni 1:20-22; Mosiah 8:9; 21:27; 22:14; 28:11; Alma 37:21-32.
Ether 1:33-43 The Promise of a Promised Land
Have students read these verses and compare the events associated with the Jaredites to the experiences of Lehi’s family in 1 Nephi. How are these experiences symbolic of experiences families face today? Cross-reference: D&C 64:23-24; 133:14.
Ether 2:1-8 The Desire of the Lord
In Ether 1:42 the Lord declared that he would “go before” Jared and his people to “a land which is choice above all the lands of the earth”. What evidence is there in Ether 2:1-8 to suggest that the Lord did go before the Jaredites? What evidence to you have in your own life that the Lord is “going before” you?
Ether 2:9-12 Moroni’s Commentary
Moroni appears to follow the pattern of his father, Mormon, when he makes these remarks. He is offering commentary on what he has read from the plates. What important message is he sending to those who will one day read his record? What specific people is the message addressed to?
Ether 2:13-15 The Lord Chastens the Brother of Jared
Have students read Ether 1:33-2:5 and list each time that the Brother of Jared called upon the Lord. Remind students that the Lord was guiding the Jaredites to “the land of promise” (Ether 2:7). Why would the Lord chastise the Brother of Jared? Why would it not be wise to assume that the Lord has given you all the blessings that you can receive from him? Why would it be unwise to stop seeking direction from the Lord assuming that you were where he wanted you to be? What was the “evil” spoken of in Ether 2:15?
Ether 2:16-25 Two Great Problems
The Lord gave the Brother of Jared a design for a vessel to take them across the “great water”. There were two problems with the design. Why would the Lord give the Brother of Jared an incomplete design? How did the Lord respond to the two design questions? What ways can the Lord help us when we find ourselves in difficulties not of our creation?
Ether 3:1-5 The Brother of Jared’s Plan
The Lord gave the Brother of Jared the solution to his problem of lack of air. The Brother of Jared had to come up with a plan to bring light into the vessels. What was his plan? What words would you use to describe the way the Brother of Jared approached the Lord with his plan? How should we approach the Lord with our own plans?
Ether 3:6-16 The Lord Manifests Himself to the Brother of Jared
In Ether 4:4 Moroni says that the things the Brother of Jared saw were the greatest things ever seen by anyone. Have students find verses that would explain why the Lord was so gracious to the Brother of Jared. What had the Brother of Jared done to prove his faith in the Lord? How had the Brother of Jared responded to chastisement? What was the Brother of Jared willing to do to comply with the Lord’s commandments?
Ether 3:14 Jesus Christ is the Father and the Son
Cross-reference: Ether 4:7; Mosiah 15:2-5, 10-12.
Ether 3:17-28 The Lord Could Not Withhold Anything from the Brother of Jared
The Brother of Jared saw the finger of the Lord, the spirit body of Jesus Christ before he was born in the flesh, and all those who would ever live upon the earth. According to these verses, why did the Lord give the Brother of Jared these great privileges?
Ether 4:1-19 Commentary by Moroni
Have students find things they can do to receive spiritual experiences similar to those that the Brother of Jared had.
Ether 5:1-6 A Message to the Three Witnesses
What direction does Moroni give Joseph Smith concerning those who may see the plates? Cross-reference: D&C 17:1-9.
Ether 6:1-12 The Journey to the Promised Land
Have students read these verses and compare the journey of the Jaredites to the promised land with their own journey from wherever they are to the presence of God. What must we do to have the light of Christ in our lives as we make our journey back to the Father?
Ether 6:13-30 This Thing Leadeth to Captivity
In Ether 6: 23 the Brother of Jared said, “Surely this thing leadeth to captivity.” Read verses 13-30 and see what thing would lead the Jaredites to be captives. What things lead us to be captives?

Mormon 7-9 A Testimony of God and Miracles
Mormon 7:1-8 Therefore Repent
Have students read verses 1-8 and list all the reasons Mormon gives for the remnant of the Nephites to repent. What is it that people must do today to show they have repented of their sins? For example, what must people do before they can be baptized and receive the Holy Ghost?
Mormon 7:9 This and That
Have students read this verse and explain what the words “this” and “that” stand for in these verses. How is it that the Book of Mormon may convince people that they should believe the Bible?
Mormon 8:1-14 I am Moroni
Read these verses and list the things that Moroni reveals about himself. What reasons does he have to be distressed? What reasons does he have to rejoice? How are we like Moroni?
Mormon 8:26-32 The Book of Mormon Shall Come
In these verses Moroni tells about the circumstances in the world at the time the Book of Mormon shall come forth. Have students read these verses and identify those circumstances. How are the things Moroni described like our circumstances today?
Mormon 8:33-41 I Know Your Doing
The Lord showed Moroni a vision of the people who would one day live in the days when the Book of Mormon would be published and available. What warnings does he give to people who live in this generation? Cross-reference: Ezekiel 16:49-50.
Mormon 9:1-5 Kindling Unquenchable Fire
In these verses Moroni uses the phrase “consciousness of” and then adds a word. What are the things the wicked will be conscious of that will “kindle a flame of unquenchable fire”? (verse 5)
Mormon 9:6-14 A Message to Unbelievers
Moroni offers some help to unbelievers by giving them some principles to ponder. What does he ask the unbelievers to consider about God and Christ that will make a difference when they stand before God to be judged?
Mormon 9:15-20 Miracles
Invite students to read these verses looking for principles related to miracles. What evidence is there in your own life that miracles still exist? What causes miracles to cease? What can we do to insure that miracles will still continue among us?
Mormon 9:21-31 Things to Consider
Moroni appears to believe that what he is writing will be the last thing he records on the plates. In verses 21-25 he introduces the promise that was made to the three Nephite disciples. What was the promise? In verses 26-31 he provides a checklist of things we can do to receive the promise given to the three Nephites. Invite students to read through the list and comment on an item they feel is particularly significant to them.
Mormon 9:32-37 An Imperfect Record?
Have students read these verses and explain why Moroni feels the record kept by his ancestors is not perfect. If the record is not perfect what, according to Moroni is the value of the record? Have students explain how this record, which is not perfect, has made a difference in their lives. Remind students of the statement made by Joseph Smith concerning the Book of Mormon (see sixth paragraph of the Introduction). Cross-reference: D&C 17:6.

Mormon 1-6 The Entire Destruction of the Nephites
Summarize the things we learn about Mormon from these verses. How is the calling of Mormon similar to the calling of Joseph Smith? How is it similar to the calling of a Melchizedek Priesthood holder?
Mormon 1:11-19 No Gifts from God
List the gifts that the Lord removed from the Nephites. What happens to people who have had the gifts of God who are no longer worthy of them? Cross-reference: D&C 1:13-16.
Mormon 2:1-15 The Day of Grace Was Passed
In verses 11-14 what caused Mormon to rejoice? What caused him to feel sorrow? How are Mormon’s feelings similar to the feelings the Lord himself has for his children? Cross-reference: Exodus 20:3-6; D&C 76:5-10.
Mormon 2:16-29 The Lord Did Not Abide with Us
Look at these verses and find the words God, Lord, and Spirit. What help did the Nephites receive from the Godhead in these terrible years of battle? What were the consequences? What have been the consequences in your life when you have not included the Lord or have not been worthy of the Lord’s blessings?
Mormon 3:1-16 Mormon Refuses to Lead the Nephite Armies
In verse 16 Mormon declares that he refused to lead the Nephite armies against the Lamanites. Read verses 1-15 and see if you can find reasons why he would make such a decision. Cross-reference: D&C 103:12-20.
Mormon 3:17-22 I Write unto You
Mormon uses these verses to make an editorial comment, to send a message to the reader. As you read these verses, what is the overarching principle that Mormon is trying to teach you? How will your life be blessed if you will follow this principle?
Mormon 4-6 The Ministry of Mormon
Have students read the following verses and summarize the feelings and observations of Mormon as he records the final years of the Nephites before their entire destruction. Mormon 4:11-12, 21; 5:2, 8, 10-24; 6:19-22. Why would the Lord want us to have this record? What can we do to prevent the entire destruction of a nation and people?

3 Nephi 27-30 and 4 Nephi The Nephites Rise and Fall
The disciples were wondering what to call the church that Christ had established. When he answered their question he also answered other questions. Have students list the other questions that Jesus answered in these verses. Why must we be careful in the way that we use the name of the Lord?
3 Nephi 27:13-22 This Is My Gospel
In these verses Jesus explains what is meant by “the gospel of Jesus Christ.” Have students list all the elements that make up the gospel of Jesus Christ. Why is it that we must “repent . . . and come unto [Christ] and be baptized in [Christ’s] name”? How do the ordinances and covenants of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints help persons meet the requirements of the gospel of Jesus Christ?
3 Nephi 27:23-33 And Now I Go to the Father
Before his departure from his Nephite disciples, Jesus asked them to do to things. What did he ask them to write? What did he ask them to be? And what did he ask them to do? Why did he joy in their generation and sorrow in the fourth generation? What should we write, and be and do in order to return to the Father?
3 Nephi 28:1-11 More Blessed Are Ye
These verses speak of the blessings that the disciples requested of the Lord before he ascended into heaven. Nine disciples requested one thing (verse 2), and three requested something else (verse 6). Compare what Jesus said to both groups concerning their desires. What valuable lesson can we learn about the desires of our hearts?
3 Nephi 28:12-40 The Three Nephites
List all the things that Mormon knew about the three Nephite disciples. What do we learn from these verses about those disciples and about being transfigured? Cross-reference: Moses 1:9-11.
3 Nephi 29:1-9 The Words of the Lord
When the Book of Mormon comes forth among the Gentiles in America it will be a sign that the covenant that the Lord made with the house of Israel is about to be fulfilled. According to this chapter, what other truths will be confirmed by the coming forth of the Book of Mormon? What else that the Lord has promised will also come to pass?
3 Nephi 30:1-2 Become a Part of the House of Israel
What are the things the Gentiles will have to do to become a part of the house of Israel? How do our missionaries help persons become eligible for the blessings of the house of Israel?
4 Nephi 1:1-18 There Was No Contention in All the Land
Read these verses and list all the things that happened to the people because they were converted to Christ. What evidence is there in your life that you are converted to Christ?
4 Nephi 1:23-49 Dwindling in Unbelief and Wickedness
Trace the fall of the Nephites. List the step by step decline that they went through until there were “none that were righteous save it were the disciples of Jesus”. What evidence is there that we as individuals, neighborhoods, cities and nations are not on that same path?
3 Nephi 22-26 New Scripture Revealed
Have students determine what the word “then” means in the first line of 3 Nephi 22:1. In order to do this they will have to read 3 Nephi 21:23-29. “Then” in the context of verse 1 means: when the Lamanites, the Gentiles, and the lost tribes of Israel have been gathered together from their dispersion and come to New Jerusalem.
3 Nephi 22:1-17 In a Little Wrath I Hid My Face
For many years the house of Israel experienced terrible persecution. However, when the gathering of Israel has been completed, there will be great blessings. Have students read these verses and list the blessings promised to the righteous of the house of Israel. Ask students to explain what the Lord means when he says, in verse 8, “with great mercies will I gather thee”. Ask students what mercies have been granted to them when they have been gathered into the house of Israel.
3 Nephi 22:17 Memorize
Have students memorize this verse. Why would this verse bring comfort to those who are part of the house of Israel today?
3 Nephi 23:1-14 Holy Scripture
When Jesus spoke to the Nephites he spoke of the writings of two prophets. Have students search this chapter and identify the writings Jesus told the Nephites to explore and preserve. (Isaiah, 1-4; Samuel the Lamanite, 9-13) Ask students why they think the Lord would want the Nephites to preserve the words of these two prophets.
3 Nephi 24-25 The Writings of Malachi
In addition to Isaiah and Samuel the Lamanite, the Lord instructed the Nephites to include the revelations given to Malachi. These words were written after Lehi left Jerusalem. The Lord invites Israel to “Return unto me and I will return unto you” (24:7). Ask students to read 24:7-11 and discuss how paying tithes is like “returning to the Lord.” Ask students to speak of the blessings they have received through the payment of tithing.
Notice that the Lord speaks of destroying the “root and branch” of the wicked in 25:1. But, he speaks of “the heart of the fathers [being turned by the Lord] to the children” in 25:6. Have students explain why the coming of Elijah will stop the Lord from smiting the earth with a curse.
3 Nephi 26:1-5 He Did Expound All Things
Have students read these verses and list the things of which Jesus spoke to the Nephites. Why did Jesus want them to hear these things? Why has he kept many of these things from us today?
3 Nephi 26:6-12 I Was about to Write
Find verses that explain what Mormon wanted to write and was withheld from doing so. What reason did the Lord give Mormon for not letting him write all the things that the Lord taught the Nephites? What can we do to prepare ourselves to receive all that the Lord wants to give us in this generation?
3 Nephi 26:13-21 They Did Minister One to Another
Have students read these verses and select one event that they would want to have been a part of. Have them explain why they would have wanted to participate in such events. What sorts of events can we participate in today that were available to the Nephites?
3 Nephi 16-21 The Lord's Covenant with Israel
In the context of 3 Nephi 16 the word “Gentiles” means those who are not descendants of Lehi or descendants of the Jews from Jerusalem. The expression “House of Israel” means those who are descendants of Lehi or descendants of the Jews from Jerusalem. Divide students into two groups and have one list the promises made to the Gentiles and the other list the promises made to the house of Israel.
3 Nephi 17:1-10 Faith to Be Healed
Verse 6 declares that Jesus was “filled with compassion”, verse 10 says that the Nephites “did bathe [the Lord’s] feet with their tears.” Have students explain why Jesus and the Nephites were so filled with emotion. Ask students what it is that fills them with similar emotion. What are the things they are grateful for that only the Lord could do for them?
3 Nephi 17:11-25 Jesus wept
Find the phrases “Jesus groaned within himself”, “he wept”, “he wept again”. What is it that is causing the Lord to have such an emotional reaction? How do we feel about our children? What causes us to weep for joy when we think of our children?
3 Nephi 18:1-16 This Shall Ye Do in Remembrance
Jesus demonstrated how he should be remembered. He broke bread and poured wine and distributed it to the disciples. They gave it to the multitude. Have students find the statements of the Lord that explain why we should do these things today and what is meant by this ordinance.
3 Nephi 18:17-39 How We Should Worship
After speaking to the disciples about the sacrament, Jesus turned his attention to the multitude and gave them instructions concerning their meetings. He explained what they should do and what they should not do when they met together. Have students read these verses and list the things that Jesus said concerning their behavior during meetings. What can we do to make our meetings more in harmony with the Lord’s instructions?
3 Nephi 19:1-15 Jesus Came to Them
The Lord had departed from the Nephites for a time. As they waited, the disciples did certain things. List the things they did. Have students explain why they think Jesus waited until all these things were done before he appeared to the Nephites again. When should we expect that the Lord will manifest himself to us?
3 Nephi 19:16-36 Jesus Prayed to the Father
Sometimes people can become distressed because the Nephites are praying to Jesus and not to the Father. There is no explanation as to why they prayed to Jesus. The only concern the Nephites appear to have is that they do what Jesus asked them to do. And in so doing they were blessed with spiritual manifestations beyond anything any other group had ever seen. Ask students to find the words that Jesus used when he prayed to the Father. What do these words teach us about his relationship with the Father? What can we do to make our prayers more like those of the Son of God?
3 Nephi 20:1-13 Now I Finish the Commandment
Jesus produces bread and wine to distribute to the Nephites. After having done this he explains that he will fulfill the covenant God made to the house of Israel that he would gather them again to the knowledge of the Lord their God. How is the sacrament service symbolic of the gathering of Israel? What are the deacons taking to the congregation? Where do they go when they take the emblems? What do the priests do before the emblems are brought back? What do the deacons bring back to the table? What happens to it when they bring it back? Cross-reference: D&C 115:5-6.
3 Nephi 20:14-22 I Will Be in the Midst of You
What are the promises that the Lord makes to the House of Israel concerning the land of America? What must we do to take advantage of the promises the Lord has made concerning the people who live in this land?
3 Nephi 20:23-46 I Will Remember the Covenant
Find the word “covenant” in verses 25, 26, 27, 29, 46. What is the covenant that the Lord has made to the faithful people who are of the house of Israel?
3 Nephi 21:1-11 A Sign from the Lord (Scripture Analysis)
Take the students through the following scripture analysis so that they might understand the importance of the Book of Mormon.
1 And verily I [Jesus Christ] say unto you [the house of Israel], I give unto you a sign, that ye may know the time when these things [the fulfilling of the covenant God made with Israel to gather them] shall be about to take place—that I shall gather in, from their long dispersion, my people, O house of Israel, and shall establish again among them my Zion;
2 And behold [pay attention], this is the thing which I will give unto you for a sign—for verily I say unto you that when these things which I declare unto you, and which I shall declare unto you hereafter of myself, and by the power of the Holy Ghost which shall be given unto you of the Father [the words Jesus Christ has spoken that will be recorded and come forth in the Book of Mormon], shall be made known unto the Gentiles that they [the Gentiles] may know concerning this people who are a remnant of the house of Jacob [the Lamanites], and concerning this my people [the Lamanites] who shall be scattered by them [the Gentiles];
3 Verily, verily, I say unto you, when these things shall be made known unto them of the Father [the words that Jesus spoke to the Nephites as found in the Book of Mormon], and shall come forth of the Father [in the form of the Book of Mormon], from them [Gentiles] unto you [the Lamanites, the children of Israel];
4 For it is wisdom in the Father that they [the Gentiles] should be established in this land [America], and be set up as a free people by the power of the Father, that these things [the Book of Mormon] might come forth from them [the Gentiles] unto a remnant of your seed [the Lamanites], that the covenant of the Father [to gather the house of Israel] may be fulfilled which he hath covenanted with his people, O house of Israel;
5 Therefore [since the Father will fulfill his covenant to gather Israel and this message will come from the Gentiles to the house of Israel through the Book of Mormon], when these works and the works which shall be wrought among you hereafter shall come forth from the Gentiles, unto your seed which shall dwindle in unbelief because of iniquity;
6 For thus it behooveth the Father that it [the Book of Mormon] should come forth from the Gentiles, that he may show forth his power unto the Gentiles, for this cause that the Gentiles, if they will not harden their hearts, that they may repent and come unto me and be baptized in my name and know of the true points of my doctrine, that they may be numbered among my people, O house of Israel;
7 And when these things [the coming forth of the Book of Mormon from the Gentiles to the house of Israel] come to pass that thy seed [the Lamanites] shall begin to know these things—it shall be a sign unto them [the Lamanites], that they may know that the work of the Father hath already commenced unto the fulfilling of the covenant which he hath made unto the people who are of the house of Israel.
8 And when that day shall come [that the Lamanites hear the message of the Book of Mormon from the Gentiles], it shall come to pass that kings shall shut their mouths; for that which had not been told them shall they see; and that which they had not heard shall they consider.
9 For in that day [when the Book of Mormon shall come forth], for my sake shall the Father work a work, which shall be a great and a marvelous work among them; and there shall be among them those who will not believe it, although a man shall declare it unto them.
10 But behold [pay attention], the life of my servant [Joseph Smith] shall be in my hand; therefore [because the life of Joseph Smith is being protected by the Lord] they [the unbelievers and the hard of heart] shall not hurt him, although he shall be marred because of them. Yet I will heal him, for I will show unto them that my wisdom is greater than the cunning of the devil.
11 Therefore [because the wicked will not be able to destroy the work that Joseph Smith shall bring forth, though they may mar him] it shall come to pass that whosoever will not believe in my words, who am Jesus Christ, which the Father shall cause him to bring forth unto the Gentiles [the Book of Mormon], and shall give unto him [the Lord’s servant, Joseph Smith] power that he shall bring them forth unto the Gentiles, (it shall be done even as Moses said) they [the unbelieving among the Gentiles] shall be cut off from among my people who are of the covenant [the house of Israel].
After doing this scripture analysis, invite students to express what they have learned concerning the Book of Mormon, Joseph Smith, and the restoration of the house of Israel.
3 Nephi 21:12-29 Then Shall the Work of the Father Commence among All . . . My People – Scripture Analysis
Take the students through the following scripture analysis and ask them what questions are being answered concerning the gathering of Israel.
12 And my people who are a remnant of Jacob [the Lamanites] shall be among the Gentiles, yea, in the midst of them [the Gentiles] as a lion among the beasts of the forest, as a young lion among the flocks of sheep, who, if he go through both treadeth down and teareth in pieces, and none can deliver.
13 Their [the Lamanites’] hand shall be lifted up upon their adversaries, and all their enemies shall be cut off.
14 Yea, wo be unto the Gentiles except theyrepent; for it shall come to pass in that day, saith the Father, that I will cut off thy [the Gentiles’] horses out of the midst of thee, and I will destroy thy chariots;
15 And I will cut off the cities of thy [the Gentiles’] land, and throw down all thy strongholds;
16 And I will cut off witchcrafts out of thy [the Gentiles’] land, and thou shalt have no more soothsayers;
17 Thy graven images I will also cut off, and thy [the Gentiles’] standing images out of the midst of thee, and thou shalt no more worship the works of thy hands;
18 And I will pluck up thy groves out of the midst of thee; so will I destroy thy [the Gentiles’] cities.
19 And it shall come to pass that all lyings, and deceivings, and envyings, and strifes, and priestcrafts, and whoredoms, shall be done away.
20 For it shall come to pass, saith the Father, that at that day [the day that the Lamanites overthrow the power of the Gentiles] whosoever will not repent and come unto my Beloved Son, them will I cut off from among my people, O house of Israel;
21 And I will execute vengeance and fury upon them [the unrepentant among the Gentiles], even as upon the heathen, such as they have not heard.
22 But if they [the Gentiles] will repent and hearken unto my words, and harden not their hearts, I will establish my church among them [the Gentiles], and they [the Gentiles] shall come in unto the covenant and be numbered among this the remnant of Jacob [the Lamanites], unto whom I have given this land for their inheritance;
23 And they [the Gentiles who come into the covenant] shall assist my people, the remnant of Jacob, and also as many of the house of Israel as shall come, that they may build a city, which shall be called the New Jerusalem.
24 And then [when the Lamanites, the repentant Gentiles, and others of the house of Israel shall assemble to build the New Jerusalem] shall they assist my people that they may be gathered in, who are scattered upon all the face of the land, in unto the New Jerusalem.
25 And then [when the New Jerusalem has been built] shall the power of heaven come down among them; and I also will be in the midst.
26 And then [when the New Jerusalem is built and the Lord has sent power from heaven to assist] shall the work of the Father commence at that day, even when this gospel shall be preached among the remnant of this people [the Lamanites]. Verily I say unto you, at that day [when the New Jerusalem is built and the gospel is preached among the Lamanites and the power of the Lord is with them] shall the work of the Father commence among all the dispersed of my people, yea, even the tribes which have been lost, which the Father hath led away out of Jerusalem.
27 Yea, the work shall commence among all the dispersed of my people, with the Father to prepare the way whereby they [all the dispersed of the tribes of Israel] may come unto me, that they may call on the Father in my name.
28 Yea, and then shall the work commence, with the Father among all nations in preparing the way whereby his people may be gathered home to the land of their inheritance.
29 And they [all the dispersed tribes of Israel] shall go out from all nations; and they shall not go out in haste, nor go by flight, for I will go before them, saith the Father, and I will be their rearward.

3 Nephi 12-15 Jesus Teaches the Nephites
The word “blessed” appears 13 times in verses 1-12. Have students select three “blessed’s” that have special meaning to them and explain what blessings they have received as they have followed the Lord’s counsel.
3 Nephi 12:13-19 Salt and Light, Jots and Tittles
Have students read verse 19 and ask them to remember what Jesus taught about salt and light (see verses 13-16). How does repentance and having a broken heart and a contrite spirit make us like the salt and light Jesus spoke of?
3 Nephi 12:1-20 The Qualifications for Entering the Kingdom of Heaven
In 3 Nephi 12:20 the Lord declares, “Therefore come unto me and be ye saved; for verily I say unto you, that except ye shall keep my commandments, which I have commanded you at this time, ye shall in no case enter into the kingdom of heaven. The commandments to the multitude up to this point have been:
1) Give heed to the words of the twelve Nephite disciples (3 Nephi 12:1)
2) Be meek and mild and come to Christ (3 Nephi 12:2-12)
3) Be the salt of the earth (3 Nephi 12:13)
4) Be the light of the Nephite people (3 Nephi 12:14-16)
5) Repent and come unto Christ (3 Nephi 12:17-20)
Invite students to read 3 Nephi 12:1-20 and list these commandments.
3 Nephi 12:21-48 Christ’s Commandments vs. The Traditions of the Leaders
For the remainder of 3 Nephi 12 and all of chapters 13 and 14, the Lord will explain the difference between his commandments and the traditions of the people. Assign students to pick out two or three of the commandments and explain how the Lord’s commandments are different from the traditions of the Nephites.
1) Murder vs. Anger (see 3 Nephi 12:21-26)
2) Adultery vs. Lust (see 3 Nephi 12:27-32)
3) Oaths vs. True Commitment (see 3 Nephi 12:33-37)
4) Vengeance vs. Graciousness (see 3 Nephi 12:38-42)
5) Hating Enemies vs. Loving Enemies (see 3 Nephi 12:43-48)
Have students read 3 Nephi 12:46-47 and explain what old things have been done away in Christ. What are some things we may do because of tradition that should be done away in Christ?
3 Nephi 13:1-24 How to Love People
Christ explains the difference between the old way of helping people and the new way he expects his disciples to follow. He talks about the following ideas:
1) How to give to the poor (3 Nephi 13:1-4)
2) How to pray (3 Nephi 13:5-15)
3) How to fast (3 Nephi 13:16-18)
4) How to set priorities (3 Nephi 13:19-24)
3 Nephi 13:25-34 Counsel to the Disciples
How does the Lord use examples from the life of the people (birds, clothing, and flowers) to help his disciples understand how the Father will watch over them in their ministry? How has the Father watched over you as you have served him in your callings?
3 Nephi 13:33 These Things?
Have students read 3 Nephi 13:33 and explain what the words “these things” refer to. See verses 25-34. Invite students to tell how putting God first in their lives has resulted in “these things” being added unto them.
3 Nephi 14:1-27 More Counsel to the Multitude
The Lord gives more counsel to the multitude on how to have peace in their relationships with each other. For example:
1) How to judge others (3 Nephi 14:1-5)
2) How to treat sacred things (3 Nephi 14:6)
3) How to treat people (3 Nephi 14:7-14)
4) How to recognize false prophets (3 Nephi 14:15-27)
Assign students to summarize the Lord’s counsel in their own words. How has following this counsel helped them come to Christ? How has this counsel helped them in their homes, in their church assignments, in their employement?
3 Nephi 15:18 Scripture Analysis
Write this verse on the board and have students explain the meaning of the highlighted words.
“And now, because of stiffneckedness [stubbornness] and unbelief they [the Jews in Jerusalem] understood not my [Christ’s] word; therefore [because the Jews in Jerusalem did not understand Christ’s words because the Jews were stubborn] I [Christ] was commanded to say no more of the Father [of what the Father desired to teach them through Christ] concerning this thing [that there were other members of the house of Israel who Jesus would appear to and teach] unto them [the Jews in Jerusalem].”
Are there things that are being held back by the Father because of our stubbornness and unbelief?

3 Nephi 8-11 The Prophecies Are Fulfilled

The resurrected Savior appeared to the Nephites.
3 Nephi 8:1-23 The Loud, Turbulent Voice
In the scriptures we learn that the voice of the Holy Ghost is a “still, small voice” (see 1 Kings 19:12; 1 Nephi 17:45; and D&C 85:6). As we learn in 1 Nephi 17:45, when we do not respond to the voice of the Spirit, the Lord sends the “voice of thunder”. Have students read 3 Nephi 8:1-23 and see the different ways the Lord spoke to the Nephites when they ignored the voice of the Spirit. What lessons have the students learned in their lives when they have ignored the voice of the Spirit? What blessings have come as they have heeded the voice of the Spirit? Cross-reference: Helaman 13:32-33.
3 Nephi 9:1-14 The Cry of the Blood of Prophets
In verses 5, 8, and 11, the voice of the Lord makes reference to the “blood of the prophets and the saints”. Ask students what the Lord did to those who persecuted the prophets and the righteous members of the church, or saints. Cross-reference: Helaman 14:20-27.
3 Nephi 9:15-22 Jesus Bears Witness of Himself
As Jesus speaks to the Nephites he does two things: He testifies of Himself, and He tells the righteous people what their blessings will be if they follow Him. Invite students to make two lists: first, a list of statements Jesus makes about Himself; and second, a list of those things He says about righteous people. Now that the Law of Moses has been fulfilled by the Lord’s resurrection, we are no longer to offer animal sacrifices to worship the Lord our God. Ask students why they think the Lord asked us to offer a different kind of sacrifice.
3 Nephi 10:1-8 The People Weep and Howl
Have students read 3 Nephi 10:8. Have them find things in verses 1-7 that would make the Nephite people “weep and howl.” Cross-reference Helaman 14:27-30.
3 Nephi 10:9-14 A Foreshadowing of Things to Come
Help students understand that the events described in these chapters is a foreshadowing of events that will occur when Jesus comes again in glory (see 88:87-97). What is there in these verses that should give us hope if we keep the commandments?
3 Nephi 10:18 When Did Jesus Appear to the Nephites
Help students see that Jesus did not appear to the Nephites immediately after His resurrection. Remember, the great destruction among the Nephites, which was a sign of Christ’s death, happened “in the first month” of the thirty-fourth year after the signs were given of His birth. The appearance of Christ happens “in the ending of the thirty-fourth year” (3 Nephi 10:18).
3 Nephi 11:1-8 The Appearance of Christ among the Nephites
As students read the account of the appearance of Christ to the Nephites, ask them to describe what kind of people the Nephites were, based on these verses. How do we know they were good people? What reward came to them because of their goodness? What rewards have come to you because of your goodness?
3 Nephi 11:9-41 There Shall Be No More Disputations
In verse 22 and again in verse 28, the Lord warns the Nephites that there must not be disputations (arguments) among them. Have students read 3 Nephi 11:9-41 and find all the things that Jesus did so that it would be impossible for a sincere person to be able to argue about anything concerning His visit. What can we do to avoid arguments and contention among ourselves? Have students memorize 3 Nephi 11:29.
3 Nephi 11:31-41 The Doctrine of Christ
Have students read these verses and answer this question: what is the doctrine of Christ? Why does it mean to be built upon His doctrine? Why will those who are built upon His doctrine be protected against the forces of evil?

3 Nephi 1-7 The Chosen People Choose Poorly
The signs foretold by Samuel the Lamanite began to appear, announcing to the world that the Son of God was born. Have students find what those who did not believe the words of the prophets suddenly knew when they saw the signs.
3 Nephi 1:26-2:4 A Quick Fall from Righteousness
The signs of Christ's birth were given in the 92nd year of the reign of the judges. Have students read 3 Nephi 1:22-25 and summarize the qualities of the people. Compare those qualities to the circumstances of the 95th year of the reign of the judges (see 3 nephi 2:2-3). How could the affairs of the people change so quickly? What is the path that leads from good to evil so quickly?
3 Nephi 2:10-19 The Path from Good to Evil
Have students read 3 Nephi 2:10-19 and find key words that describe the fall of the Nephites. How do people follow that same path today?
3 Nephi 3:6-10 Recognizing Evil When It Appears
Giddianhi, the leader of the Gadianton robbers, wrote a letter to Lachoneus, the leader of the Nephites. Giddianhi was an evil man. But, the words he wrote make him seem good. Have students read these verses and find words and phrases that sound good but are truly evil. How can we recognize evil when we hear it today?
3 Nephi 3:21-26 Gaining Divine Protection
The Gadianton robbers were thieves and terrorists. Their goal was to destroy the Nephites and take all that they had. Gidgidonni was the commander of the armies of the Nephites. He is encouraged to go after the terrorists. But he does not. Have students read 3 Nephi 3:21-26 and make a list of all the things Gidgidonni asked the people to do to protect themselves from terrorists. How are these things like actions we can take to protect ourselves from sin?
3 Nephi 4:16 Gathering Together
The Nephites gathered together. They came together as a people and brought their food, animals and possessions with them. Have students read 3 Nephi 4:16 and describe the plan of the Gadianton robbers. Why would this plan fail? (See 3 Nephi 4:4.) What kinds of things can we do do fortify ourselves against people who want to cut us off from Christ and His doctrines?
3 Nephi 4:29-33 Songs of Celebration
When the battle against the Gadianton robbers ended, there was a great celebration. New songs were written and sung. Have students read 3 Nephi 4:29-33 and summarize the themes of these songs. Invite students to write poems to describe their feelings about the Redemption they have received through the Atonement of Christ.
3 Nephi 5:10-20 Mormon, the man
Mormon writes to all who will read his record in some future time. In verses 11-13, 16, 20 what important things do we learn about Mormon?
3 Nephi 5:24-26 Gathering again?
In 3 Nephi 4 we read about the gathering of the Nephites to protect them from the Gadianton robbers. How is that gathering like the gather that Mormon speaks about in 3 Nephi 5:24-26? Cross-reference: Articles of Faith 1:10; 2 Nephi 29:13-14.
3 Nephi 6:5 Memorization
Invite students to memorize one or more of the following passages: 3 Nephi 1:13-14; 3:20-21; 5:13; 6:5. Have students explain how the doctrines in these passages apply to their own lives.
3 Nephi 6:10-18 Another Fall?
The Nephites fall into apostasy again! Have students read 3 Nephi 6:10-18 and list all the activities the Nephites engaged in that led to apostasy. Why do people who are so blessed "wilfully rebel against God"?
3 Nephi 6:19-30 A Different Kind of Gathering
In these chapters we have read about the gathering of the Nephites to defend themselves against the Gadianton robbers. We have read about the gathering of Israel. 3 Nephi 6:19-30 speaks of a different kind of gathering. Have students read verses 21, 27-30 and describe the gathering spoken of. Why is this gathering evil?
3 Nephi 7:1-13 They Were Not Righteous
In 3 Nephi 7:11 we read that the Nephites "were not a righteous people." Have students read verses 1013 and find evidence that the Nephites were not righteous. How can we determine if we are righteous today?
3 Nephi 7:14-26 Another Great "Nephi"
These verses speak of a man named Nephi. His second-greatgrandfather was Alma the Younger. Invite students to review what type of person Alma the Younger was when we first read about him (see Mosiah 27:8). Have students read 3 Nephi 7:14-26 and describe in their own words the man called Nephi. Why was it important that Alma the Younger be converted to the Lord over a hundred years before this Nephi was born? What can we do to insure that generations born after us will be righteous?

Helaman 13-16 Samuel the Lamanite
Helaman 13:12-16 Ripe for Destruction
Many times in scripture the Lord makes reference to the fact that people are ripe for destruction. What does it mean when fruit is ripe? What are the characteristics of ripe fruit as opposed to fruit that is not ripe? What does it mean to be “ripe” for destruction? According to verses 13-14 why has the Lord not already destroyed the wicked Nephites? Cross-reference: Alma 14:7-9; 16:9.
Helaman 13:17-23 Treasures and Riches
Have students find the words “treasures” and “riches”. What did the angel of the Lord tell Samuel to tell the Nephites about their treasures and riches? Cross-reference: Jacob 2:19.
Helaman 13:24-28 Prophets or Men?
Ask students why the Nephites would choose to reject prophets and follow the words or worldly men? Why do people do the same thing today? Cross-reference: Amos 3:7; D&C 1:12-14.
Helaman 13:29-39 It Is Everlastingly Too Late
Samuel the Lamanite taught that there comes a time when the Lord will no longer protect His people. See Helaman 13:14. When is it too late for a person to repent and receive salvation? See Helaman 13:37-38.
Helaman 14:1-13 The Signs of Christ’s Coming
The Lord commanded Samuel, by an angel, to tell the Nephites what the signs would be of the coming of Christ into the world. Have students find the signs mentioned my Samuel. How was the Lord’s mercy shown to the Nephites when He told them of these signs?
Helaman 14:14-19 Repent ye! Repent ye!
Have students explain the connection between the Savior’s death and repentance.
Helaman 14:20-31 The Signs of Christ’s Death
Invite students to list the signs of Christ’s death. Why would the Lord want the people to know of the Savior’s birth and death, even though they lived on the other side of the world from where these events took place? Cross-reference: Jacob 4:4-6.
Helaman 15:1-17 The Character of the Saved
In these verses the Lord lists the qualities of the Lamanites that insure that they shall be saved. Have students search these verses looking for those qualities that the Lamanites possessed.
Helaman 16:13-25 They May Have Guessed Right
As the time for the coming of Christ grew near the signs began to appear. How did the wicked react to the signs? Why did they not believe?
Helaman 13-16 A Foreshadowing of Things to Come

The events of these chapters show that the Lord announces the signs of his first coming. Help students understand that He has also given signs concerning his Second Coming. See Zechariah 14:4-9; D&C 88:87-93; Joseph Smith – Matthew 1:33-36; 1 Nephi 14:12-17; 2 Nephi 29:11-14. How are the signs of the Lord’s Second Coming like the signs of His coming among the Nephites?

Alma 40-42 The State of the Soul after Death
Alma 40:1-5 A Time Appointed to Rise from the Dead
Look over these verses and write a one-sentence summary of the doctrine Alma is teaching.
Alma 40:6-10 Time?
Compare how Alma uses the word “time” in verse 8 with the way he uses that same word in verses 9-10. Cross-reference: D&C 38:2; Moses 1:6.
Alma 40:11-22 The State of the Soul after Death and before the Resurrection
Find the words “happiness”, “misery”, and “resurrection”. What important principles does Alma teach Corianton concerning these matters? How is Alma attempting to help Corianton want to repent? What lesson is the Book of Mormon teaching parents on how to help their children to repent?
Alma 40:23-26 No Unclean Thing Can Inherit the Kingdom of God
Have students memorize Alma 40:23. Why would this verse give everyone hope? Have students memorize Alma 40:26. Why would this verse cause us to want to repent?
Alma 41:1-3 It Is Requisite?
What does the word “requisite” mean? Have students determine the definition of this word and substitute that definition into the verses as they re-read them.
Alma 41:4-7 Scripture Study
4 And if their (mankind’s) works are evil they (mankind’s evil works) shall be restored (returned, given back) unto them (mankind) for evil. Therefore (because whatever mankind has done will be returned to them), all things shall be restored to their proper order, every thing to its natural frame—mortality (that which can die) raised (resurrected) to immortality (that which cannot die), corruption (things which decay and grow old) to incorruption (things which never decay or grow old) —raised to endless happiness to inherit the kingdom of God, or to endless misery to inherit the kingdom of the devil, the one (the kingdom of God) on one hand, the other (the kingdom of the devil) on the other—
5 The one (the righteous) raised to happiness according to his desires of happiness, or good according to his desires of good; and the other (the wicked) to evil according to his desires of evil; for as he (the wicked) has desired to do evil all the day long even so shall he (the wicked) have his reward of evil when the night (the final judgment) cometh.
6 And so it is on the other hand. If he (the righteous) hath repented of his sins, and desired righteousness until the end of his days, even so he shall be rewarded unto righteousness.
7 These (persons who have repented of their sins and desired righteousness) are they that are redeemed of the Lord; yea, these are they that are taken out, that are delivered from that endless night of darkness (spirit prison [see Alma 40:13-14]); and thus they stand or fall; for behold, they are their own judges, whether to do good or do evil.
Notice that in verse 6 Alma speaks of the righteous as being those who have “repented of [their] sins”. Help students understand that all people commit sins, but that there is hope for those who repent. Cross-reference: Mosiah 5:2-5.
Alma 41:10 Memorization
Have students memorize this verse. Invite them to translate it into a more modern way of expressing the same thought. What evidence do they see around them that tells them the principle taught in this verse is true?
Alma 41:11 Say What?
In this verse there are idiomatic expressions that made sense to people who lived in the generation of Joseph Smith. They may not make sense today. For example, what is meant by “the gall of bitterness”? What is meant by the “bonds of iniquity”? Gall is a yellow or greenish colored fluid produced by the liver. It produces a very bitter aftertaste if it is swallowed. Bonds, in this context, are chords or ropes that are used to tie a person so he cannot move. Why are these words so helpful in describing those who are still “in a state of nature,” or in “a carnal state”? Cross-reference: Mosiah 3:19.
Alma 41:12-15 Restoration/Reward
Have students read these verses and ask them why they should treat those around them with respect and dignity rather than cruelty and rudeness.
Alma 42:1-10 The Fall of Man in the Plan of Happiness
In an effort to explain the perfect justice of God, Alma explains the Fall and why it took place as it did. Have students read Alma 42:2-4 and explain what the Lord did to ensure that mankind would have a “probationary time”. What caused man to become carnal, sensual and devilish? (See Alma 42:5-10.) Ask students why this event, the Fall of man, was a good thing. Cross-reference: Moses 1:39.
Alma 42:11-26 God Would Cease to be God?
Find the phrase “God would cease to be God” in verses 13, 22, 25. Have students find those things which, if God did them, He would cease to be God. List the characteristics found in these verses that make God the true and living God. Why is it important for each of us to develop the characteristics of justice and mercy?
Alma 42:26-31 Do Not Endeavor to Excuse Yourself
Have students read these verses as if they were written to them. For example, “If Dave (or John or Sally) has desired to do evil, and has not repented in his days, behold, evil shall be done unto him, according to the restoration of God” (Alma 42:28). Ask students what eternal blessings come to them if they repent. What happens to their souls if they do not repent? Cross-reference: D&C 18:10-15.

Alma 36-39 Alma Counsels His Sons
This series of verses is essentially Alma’s report of his conversion. It appears to have been written down and included in the plates that were preserved by Alma and abridged by Mormon. What is there in these verses that show God’s mercy toward Alma? Why do you suppose the Lord would show such mercy to Alma when others who had tried to destroy the church of God had not been dealt with so mercifully? How has the Lord shown mercy to you?
Alma 36:25-30 Alma’s Continued Deliverance
Discuss all the ways that the Lord continued to watch over Alma after his conversion. Review Alma’s life. What has he done to merit this special attention from the Lord? What evidence is there that the Lord has not removed hardship from his life? Where can you see the blessings of the Lord amid the hardships of your own life?
Alma 37:1-7 The Records
Find the words “records” and “plates” in these verses. What are the adjectives that are used to describe the plates? These records eventually became the scriptures we read today. They are the “small and simple” things God has preserved for us. Why are they a blessing to us today?
Alma 37:8-20 Things to Remember
In these verses, Alma speaks of mysteries and memories and things to remember. What does he want his son, Helaman, to remember? Why would he want him to remember these things? What things should you remember?
Alma 37:21-31 Secret Works of Darkness
The Lord saw that the people began to work in “darkness and abominations.” What did the Lord teach Alma about secret works of darkness? How are the Lord’s words concerning persons who think they are sinning in secret being fulfilled today?
Alma 37:32-37 Overcoming Works of Darkness
Alma teaches Helaman how to overcome the affects of secret works of darkness. What are we to preach? What are we to remember? What should our relationship be with the Lord? Have students memorize Alma 37:37.
Alma 37:38-47 How to Read Scripture
In these verses, Alma gives us a small glimpse of how he reads the scriptures. He takes a literal event from the past – the voyage of Lehi from Jerusalem to the Promised Land – and looks at it allegorically, or symbolically. The event is real, but it is spoken of as if it were symbolism. He speaks of the Liahona, the wilderness, faith, and deliverance. Read these verses and explain how Alma applied the scriptures to his own life and to the life of Helaman.
Alma 38:1-15 I Shall Have Great Joy in You
Alma’s counsel to his son, Shiblon, is divided into three categories: first, commendation (verses 1-4); second, testimony (verses 5-9), and third, direction (verses 10-15). Pick one thing out of each category that you feel would be important for your children to know. Compare Alma’s testimony to Shiblon (verses 5-9) with the testimony he bore to Helaman (Alma 36:4-30). How are they the same? How are they different? Why are they different?
Alma 39:1-16 You Cannot Hide Your Crimes
Alma’s third son, Corianton, made terrible mistakes when he served as a missionary. Alma’s counsel to him is different from that given to Helaman and Shiblon. Alma’s words may be divided again into three categories: first, condemnation (verses 1-4); second, doctrine (verses 5-8); and finally, exhortation (verses 9-16). What are the most important principles taught in each category? What lessons can we learn from Alma’s approach to dealing with a child who has made serious mistakes?

Alma 32-35 Planting Good Word of God
Keep in mind that Alma and his associates have seen people in Antionum, the Zoramites, who are obsessed with wealth and status. Their success comes among the poor. Have students read Alma 32:1-6 and explain what would cause the poor to want to listen to Alma’s message.
Alma 32:7-16 Humility
Have students locate the word “humble” each time it appears in these verses. Invite them to list the things that make humility an important part of salvation. Cross-reference: Mosiah 3:19.
Alma 32:21 Scripture Memorization
Invite students to memorize this verse and discuss the relationship between faith, hope, knowledge and truth described in this verse. What are things that we hope for that we cannot see? What are things that we cannot see that we know are true? How can we know that things we cannot see are true? See John 7:17; 1 Corinthians 2:14; 2 Nephi 32:8-9.
Alma 32:23 Angels Impart the Word of God
Cross-reference: Joel 2:28-29; 3 Nephi 26:14-16; D&C 128:18; 133:58; Moses 5:6-8, 58; Helaman 16:14; Moroni 7:22-25, 37; D&C 103:19-20.
Alma 32:28-43 An Experiment with the Word of God
Alma challenges the poor among the Zoramites to perform an experiment with the word of God. He tells them to exercise faith, to believe things they cannot see for the moment, so that they will have faith and hope and receive the rewards that come from with these qualities. Take the students through these verses and invite them to analyze them. A pattern follows:
28 Now, we will compare the word unto a seed. Now, if ye [the poor among the Zoramites] give place, that a seed [the word] may be planted in your heart, behold [pay attention], if it be a true seed [the true word], or a good seed [the good word], if ye do not cast it [the true, good word] out by your unbelief, that ye will resist the Spirit of the Lord, behold, it [the true, good word] will begin to swell within your breasts; and when you feel these swelling motions, ye will begin to say within yourselves--It must needs be that this [the word] is a good seed, or that the word is good, for it [the word] beginneth to enlarge my soul; yea, it [the word] beginneth to enlighten my understanding, yea, it [the word] beginneth to be delicious to me.
29 Now behold [pay attention], would not this [the swelling feeling] increase your faith? I say unto you, Yea; nevertheless it [your faith] hath not grown up to a perfect knowledge.
30 But behold [pay attention], as the seed [the word] swelleth, and sprouteth, and beginneth to grow, then you must needs say that the seed [the word] is good; for behold it swelleth, and sprouteth, and beginneth to grow. And now, behold [pay attention], will not this [the obvious growth of the word, the obvious increased understanding from the Spirit] strengthen your faith? Yea, it will strengthen your faith: for ye will say I know that this is a good seed [word]; for behold it sprouteth and beginneth to grow.
31 And now, behold [pay attention], are ye sure that this [the word] is a good seed? I say unto you, Yea; for every seed bringeth forth unto its own likeness [words grow in our soul according to the source from which they spring].
32 Therefore [Because words produce according to their source], if a seed [word] groweth it is good, but if it groweth not, behold it is not good, therefore [because it does not grow or enlarge our understanding] it is cast away.
33 And now, behold [pay attention], because ye have tried the experiment, and planted the seed [word], and it swelleth and sprouteth, and beginneth to grow, ye must needs know that the seed [word] is good.
34 And now, behold [pay attention], is your knowledge perfect? Yea, your knowledge is perfect in that thing, and your faith is dormant [at rest, not active]; and this because you know, for ye know that the word hath swelled your souls, and ye also know that it hath sprouted up, that your understanding doth begin to be enlightened, and your mind doth begin to expand.
35 O then, is not this real? I say unto you, Yea, because it is light; and whatsoever is light, is good, because it [light] is discernible [can be understood by the mind], therefore [because it is light and good and can be discerned by the mind] ye must know that it [the light that comes from the word] is good; and now behold [pay attention], after ye have tasted this light is your knowledge perfect?
36 Behold I say unto you, Nay; neither must ye lay aside your faith, for ye have only exercised your faith to plant the seed [the good, true word] that ye might try the experiment to know if the seed [the good, true word] was good.
37 And behold [pay attention], as the tree [the word, together with the increased understanding that comes with it] beginneth to grow, ye will say: Let us nourish it [the word] with great care, that it may get root, that it may grow up, and bring forth fruit [even greater understanding] unto us. And now behold, if ye nourish it [the word] with much care it will get root, and grow up, and bring forth fruit.
38 But if ye neglect the tree [the word, together with the increased understanding that comes with it], and take no thought for its nourishment, behold it [the good, true word] will not get any root; and when the heat of the sun cometh and scorcheth it, because it [the good, true word] hath no root it withers away, and ye pluck it up and cast it out.
39 Now, this is not because the seed [the good, true word] was not good, neither is it because the fruit [the greater understanding that comes as one studies the word] thereof would not be desirable; but it is because your ground [heart] is barren, and ye will not nourish the tree, therefore [because your heart is empty and you will not nourish the word of God] ye cannot have the fruit thereof.
40 And thus [in this way], if ye will not nourish the word, looking forward with an eye of faith to the fruit thereof, ye can never pluck of the fruit of the tree of life [have a perfect knowledge of the love of God].
41 But if ye will nourish the word, yea, nourish the tree as it beginneth to grow, by your faith with great diligence, and with patience, looking forward to the fruit thereof [a perfect knowledge of the love of God], it [the good, true word] shall take root; and behold it shall be a tree springing up unto everlasting life.
42 And because of your diligence and your faith and your patience with the word in nourishing it, that it may take root in you, behold, by and by ye shall pluck the fruit thereof, which is most precious, which is sweet above all that is sweet, and which is white above all that is white, yea, and pure above all that is pure; and ye shall feast upon this fruit even until ye are filled, that ye hunger not, neither shall ye thirst [see 1 Nephi 8:10-12, 11:21-23].
43 Then, my brethren, ye shall reap [harvest] the rewards of your faith, and your diligence, and patience, and long-suffering, waiting for the tree to bring forth fruit unto you.
Alma 33:1-11 How Do I Plant the Seed?
The poor Zoramites ask Alma how they can plant the seed. Alma quotes from the writings of Zenos, “the prophet of old,” to give them the answer. Have students read verses 4-11 and look for the answer to the question, “How do I plant the word of God in my heart?”
Alma 33:19-20 The Serpent of Brass
Cross-reference: Numbers 21:4-9; John 3:14-15; Helaman 8:14-15. What does this event have to do with planting the seed of the word of God in your hearts.
Have students find the words “atonement,” and “sacrifice.” Have them explain in their own words what Alma taught concerning the atonement of Christ.
Alma 34:17-31 Cry unto God!
In these verses, Alma continues to explain to the poor people among the Zoramites how they can plant the seed of the word of God in their hearts. Have students read these verses looking for things they could do to plant that seed in their own hearts.
Alma 34:32-36 Scripture Analysis
Amulek connects the idea of the word of Christ, the atonement of Christ and repentance together in these verses. Use the following scripture analysis as you invite students to read these verses.
32 For behold [pay attention], this life is the time for men to prepare to meet God; yea, behold the day of this life is the day for men to perform their labors.
33 And now, as I [Amulek] said unto you [the Zoramites] before, as ye have had so many witnesses [the witnesses he has cited are Alma, himself, Zenos, Zenock, Moses and the scriptures], therefore [because you have so many witnesses], I beseech of [plead with] you that ye do not procrastinate [postpone] the day of your repentance until the end [judgment day]; for after this day of life, which is given us to prepare for eternity, behold [pay attention], if we do not improve our time [make the most of our time] while in this life, then cometh the night of darkness wherein there can be no labor performed.
34 Ye cannot say, when ye are brought to that awful crisis [stand before God to be judged], that I will repent, that I will return to my God. Nay, ye cannot say this; for that same spirit which doth possess your bodies at the time that ye go out of this life, that same spirit will have power to possess your body in that eternal world. [Notice that Amulek’s understanding of the resurrection is that we will have bodies and spirits, just as we do now.]
35 For behold [pay attention], if ye have procrastinated [postponed] the day of your repentance even until death, behold, ye have become subjected to the spirit of the devil, and he doth seal you his; therefore [because you are sealed to the devil], the Spirit of the Lord hath withdrawn from you, and hath no place in you, and the devil hath all power over you; and this is the final state of the wicked.
36 And this I know, because the Lord hath said he dwelleth [lives] not in unholy temples, but in the hearts of the righteous doth he dwell; yea, and he has also said that the righteous shall sit down in his kingdom, to go no more out; but their garments should be made white [their sins shall be washed away] through the blood of the Lamb.
Alma 34:38-41 Have Patience
Once again, Amulek is attempting to answer the question posed by the Zoramites, “How do we plant the seed?” Invite students to list the ways we can plant the seed and be prepared for God’s judgment.
Alma 35:1-11 It Destroyed Their Business
When Alma and Amulek finished their preaching they observed the reaction of the people. Have students find the way the rich and the poor responded to the doctrine of faith and repentance. Why would the rich refuse to repent? Why would the poor want to repent?
Alma 35:12-16 The Rewards of Repentance?
Have students read these verses and discover what happened to the people who believed the message of Alma and Amulek. While the people suffered great difficulties, they were also blessed. How did they suffer and how were they blessed? How do the righteous suffer and receive blessings in our day?

Alma 30-31 Apostate Individuals and Groups
Alma 30:1-18 Korihor the Anti-Christ
Verse 5 indicates that there was “continual peace” in the land of Zarahemla? Have students read Alma 30:1-5, 7-11 and discover why the country was at peace. What was the doctrine that Korihor preached? (See Alma 30:12-18.) What effect would this doctrine have on the peace the people were experiencing?
Alma 30:19-29 Korihor Defends His Doctrine
Korihor preached his doctrine among the people in Jershon? Ask students why this would not be a good place for Korihor to preach. (See Alma 23:6.) Have students find phrases that Korihor uses to cause the people to doubt what they believe; phrases such as: foolish traditions, usurp power, keep them in ignorance, they are in bondage, glut yourselves with the labors of their hands, etc. How does this kind of language confuse people? What can we do to avoid being deceived by such language today? Why would it be important for this man to persuade people that there would be no Christ?
Alma 30:30-47 Alma’s Testimony
In verse 39 Alma declares, “I know there is a God, and also that Christ shall come.” How does Alma know this? Have students review how Alma came to know these things by reading: Mosiah 27:13; Alma 5:45-46; 7:10-13; 8:15; 14:26; 15:6. Why would a man with Alma’s knowledge not be persuaded to believe the doctrines of Korihor? Have students read Alma’s testimony in Alma 30:39-44 and invite them to discuss the things that are most meaningful to them.
Alma 30:48-60 Korihor’s Testimony
Korihor asked Alma to produce a sign to show that the doctrines of Alma were true. Alma, by the power of God, gave him a sign. Korihor was struck dumb so that he could not speak. When this happened, he wrote his confession. Have students read his confession (verses 52-53). Have students explain how Korihor became a tool in the hands of Satan. How can we avoid having that same thing happen to us?
Alma 30:58-60 Scripture Analysis
Have students read these verses substituting nouns for pronouns and other analysis techniques shown in the model below.
58 And it came to pass that they [the people of Zarahemla] were all convinced of the wickedness of Korihor; therefore [because they were convinced of his wickedness] they were all converted again unto the Lord; and this [their re-conversion to the Lord] put an end to the iniquity after the manner of Korihor [sins that occur once a person believes there is no Christ]. And Korihor did go about from house to house, begging food for his support.
59 And it came to pass that as he [Korihor] went forth among the people, yea, among a people who had separated themselves [apostatized] from the Nephites and called themselves Zoramites, being led by a man whose name was Zoram--and as he [Korihor] went forth amongst them [the Zoramites], behold, he was run upon and trodden down, even until he was dead.
60 And thus [in this way] we see the end [final state] of him [anyone] who perverteth [deceitfully changes] the ways of the Lord; and thus [in this way] we see that the devil will not support his children [followers] at the last [judgment] day, but doth speedily drag them [his followers] down to hell.
Alma 31:5 Scripture Memorization
Invite students to memorize this verse. Discuss the principles that are in this verse and how they can assist parents and leaders in dealing with those they love and serve.
Alma 31:12-25 The Zoramite Form of Worship
Have students read these verses and mark the doctrines and practices of the Zoramites that were contrary to the doctrines of Christ. Why would Alma and his brethren be “astonished beyond all measure” (verse 19) when they saw the way the Zoramites worshipped? What is done in the Church to insure that our form of worship does not change?
Alma 31:26-35 Alma’s Prayer for the Zoramites
Find the phrase “wilt thou” and list the things that Alma asked the Lord to do to help the Zoramites return to the true form of worship. Have students read verse 35 and discuss the power that Alma requested of the Lord. What power would you request of the Lord if you could ask for anything? What do we learn about Alma from the request he made of the Lord?
Alma 31:36-38 Alma Receives and Gives Power
What was the power given by Alma to his brethren? How did the Lord provide for them as they ministered to the Zoramites? Why did the Lord do this? Invite students to review the life of Alma, his conversion, his sacrifices, his obedience. Ask them why they think it was right that the Lord would help him. What must we do to receive the Lord’s help?
