Doctrine and Covenants Section 109

Historical Background

The dedication of the Kirtland Temple was the high point of the experiences the Saints had in Kirtland, Ohio. On the 27th of March, 1836, about 1,000 people crowded into the Temple to participate in the dedicatory services. The prayer was prepared by the First Presidency of the Church (Joseph Smith, Oliver Cowdery, and Sidney Rigdon), together with Warren Cowdery and Warren Parrish. Much of the prayer is drawn from scripture and from revelations previously given by the Lord.

D&C 109:1-5 Why was the Temple Built?

What two reasons did the Prophet Joseph give for the construction of the Kirtland Temple? How has the Son of Man manifested Himself to you as you have served in the Temple?

D&C 109:6-9 Remember a Revelation

Cross-reference: D&C 88:117-120.

D&C 109:10-21 Asking the Lord for Blessings

What blessings did the Prophet Joseph ask the Lord to give the members of the Church who came to the temple? How have these blessings been fulfilled in your own temple service? Cross-reference: D&C 88:118-119; 94:8-9; 97:15-17.

D&C 109:22-53 A Blessing upon Thy Servants

What blessing did the Prophet ask upon the missionaries who would leave to preach the gospel to the world? What did the Prophet Joseph ask the Lord to do in connection with the enemies of the Church? What lesson can we learn from this prayer about how we should pray for our enemies?

D&C 109:54-58 A Blessing upon Rulers

What specific blessing did Joseph ask the Lord to place upon rulers and all the people of the earth?

D&C 109:59-67 A Blessing upon the children of Judah

What specific blessings did the Prophet Joseph ask in behalf of the posterity of Judah (the Jews), and all the remnants of Jacob (the house of Israel)? How has that prayer been answered?

D&C 109:68-76 A Blessing upon the Church and its Leaders

What blessings did the Prophet Joseph ask for himself, his family, and the leaders of the Church? What can we learn from this prayer about the things we should ask the Lord in behalf of our own families and Church leaders?

D&C 109:77-80 O Hear, O Hear, O Hear

Despite the fact that this was a written prayer, what evidence is there in these verses that the Prophet Joseph was speaking from his heart? Compare this prayer to ones that you typically hear in Church meetings or in your home. What can you do to make your prayers more meaningful?

Dcotrine and Covenants Section 108

Historical Background

The day after Christmas 1835, Lyman Sherman spoke to Joseph Smith. He said, “I have been wrought upon to make known to you my feelings an desires, and was promised that I should have a revelation which should make known my duty” (History of the Church, 2:345). Lyman was given the revelation he was promised.

D&C 108:1-8 Let Your Soul Be at Rest

What reason did the Lord give Lyman Sherman that his soul should be at rest? What promise did the Lord give Brother Sherman? What reason did the Lord give Brother Sherman to pray for his brethren? This revelation could be given to all persons who seek to know their duty. As you think of your own service, what blessings have you received because of your faithfulness?

Doctrine and Covenants Section 107

Historical Background

In February 1835, the original quorum of Twelve Apostles was selected by the Three Witnesses to the Book of Mormon (Oliver Cowdery, David Whitmer, and Martin Harris). This was in compliance with Section 18:37-39. The original quorum consisted of the following, in order of seniority, which was established by the age of the man: Thomas B. Marsh (1 Nov 1799 or 1800), David W. Patten (17 Nov 1799), Brigham Young (1 June 1801), Heber C. Kimball (14 June 1801), Orson Hyde (8 January 1805), William E. McLellin (18 January 1806), Parley P. Pratt (12 April 1807), Luke S. Johnson (3 November 1807), William Smith (13 March 1811), Orson Pratt (19 September 1811), John F. Boynton (20 September 1811), and Lyman E. Johnson (24 October 1811). These apostles were called on a mission to the Eastern States. They requested that Joseph “enquire of God for us and obtain a written revelation (if consistent [with God’s will]) that we may look upon it when we are separated, that our hearts may be comforted” (Kirtland Council Minute Book, p. 198). This section, known as the “Revelation on Priesthood,” was given in response to that request. Verses 1-58 were given on 28 March 1835. The remaining verses were given at a later date.

D&C 107:1-8 The Holy Priesthood

What important questions about the Aaronic and Melchizedek priesthoods are answered in these verses? Cross-reference: JST Genesis 14;25-40 (see also JST Hebrews 7:1-3; Alma 13:14-19; D&C 84:14).

D&C 107:9-17 The Rights of the Priesthood

What are the rights or the authorities of the Presidency of the High Priesthood, high priests, elders, and the bishopric?

D&C 107:18-20 The Power and Authority of the Priesthood

What is the difference between the power and authority of the Aaronic and Melchizedek priesthoods?

D&C 107:21-26 The Governing Quorums of the Church

What are the three governing quorums of the Church? What does it mean when the revelation says they are “equal in authority?” The modern application of that idea is shown when the President of the Church dies. At that time, the First Presidency ceases to exist. The governing quorum of the Church is the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles, with the senior member of that quorum serving as president. The Quorum of the Twelve, in this case, has equal authority to the First Presidency until the First Presidency is reorganized.

D&C 107:27-32 Decisions of the Quorums

What does the word “unanimous” mean? What blessings are promised to the quorums if they are unanimous in their decisions? What other characteristics must the quorums have if they are to be “fruitful in the knowledge of the Lord?” How can this principle be applied to your family?

D&C 107:33-39 The Duties of the Twelve, the Seventy, and High Councils

How are the duties of these quorums the same? How are they different? What is an “evangelical minister?” (See D&C 124:91-92.)

D&C 107:40-57 Things Written in the Book of Enoch

When was the High Priesthood established? How was it continued from one generation to the next? What unique things does this revelation tell us about Adam, Seth, Enos, Cainan, Mahalaleel, Jared, Enoch, Methuselah, Lamech, and Noah? What important experience took place three years before Adam died? Why is it important for us to know these things about the Holy Priesthood?

D&C 107:58-88 Order and Judgment in Councils

Verses 61-63, and 85-88 speaks of the deacons, teachers and priests. What important doctrines are given concerning these offices? Verses 58-60, and 64-67, 77-84 speak of the duties of president of the High Priesthood. What important principle is taught concerning the President of the High Priesthood in verses 82-84?

D&C 107:89-90 Elders and Seventies

How is the mission of the Elders and Seventies different? How do Elders and Seventies fulfill these duties in the modern Church?

D&C 107:91-92 The President of the High Priesthood

How is the President of the High Priesthood different from every other member or officer of the Church?

D&C 107:93-100 The Seventy

How are the Seventy different from other quorums of the Church? Why are there seven presidents? (See D&C 107:28 [25-28].) According to verse 100, what should all members of the Church remember as they serve in any calling? What impressions have you had as you have learned about the structure of the governing councils of the Church? What evidence is there that this organization comes from God and not from man?

Doctrine and Covenants Section 106

Historical Background

Joseph Smith spent the better part of the month of November preparing for the school of the prophet (see Section 88:118-141). Of this time, the Prophet wrote, “No month ever found me more busily engaged than November; but as my life consisted of activity and unyielding exertions, I made this my rule: When the Lord commands, do it” (History of the Church 2:170). This revelation is directed to Warren Cowdery, older brother of Oliver Cowdery. He and his wife, Patience Simonds, were residents of Paulet, Vermont; where Warren had acted as a physician. They were the parents of eleven children. He and his family moved to Freedom, New York in 1824, where he was the postmaster. Warren joined the Church in 1831. With this revelation, Warren Cowdery was appointed by the Prophet to serve as presiding high priest over the Church in Freedom, New York, and the surrounding communities.

D&C 106:1-8 The Calling of Warren Cowdery

What was Warren’s calling? Where was he to serve? What warnings and blessings did the Lord give Brother Cowdery? What portions of his warnings and blessings from the Lord apply to all members?

Doctrine and Covenants Section 105

Historical Background

The Lord, in Section 103, instructed the Saints in Ohio to gather together to form what would be called Zion’s Camp. With about 200 armed men, Joseph Smith came to Missouri, a march of about 1,000 miles. Their understanding was that the governor would allow the Mormons who had been forcibly removed from their property to return. This promise was made on the condition that the Saints could provide help for the local militia to provide security for the members when they returned to their homes. Six months later, the governor, Daniel Dunklin, refused to honor his promise. He believed that if the Saints were allowed to return to their lands that civil war would break out in Missouri. He would not allow the state militia to help the Saints. Since Zion’s Camp had come with the understanding that they would be working with the state militia, their hopes of being able to help the Saints in Missouri were destroyed. The only course of action available to them was to try to offer comfort and return to their homes in Ohio.

D&C 105:1-5 Building Zion

What reason did the Lord give for stopping the effort to help the Saints in Missouri return to their own lands? What laws do Saints have to be willing to live before they can be part of the Celestial Kingdom?

D&C 105:6-13 Wait for the Endowment

Why didn’t the Lord deliver the people of Missouri Himself? What preparations do the Saints have to make before the Lord will allow them to return to the land where Zion is to be built? How prepared are you for such an experience? What preparations do you need to make in your heart to live in the presence of God?

D&C 105:14-19 A Message to the Warriors

There were 200 men who abandoned their families and the farms to help Church members in Missouri reclaim their stolen property. What message did the Lord have for them? Why were they asked to travel so far without doing what the Lord asked them to do? Have you ever received a calling and been released shortly thereafter? Have you ever wondered why the Lord would place you in certain circumstances and not allow you to be successful? How does this revelation help you understand the mind of the Lord?

D&C 105:20-32 The Lord Will Give Counsel

What counsel did the Lord give to Joseph Smith and Zion’s Camp concerning his plans for the lands that had been stolen from the Saints in Missouri? How long were they supposed to wait until they tried to reclaim the land again?

D&C 105:33-41 Sue for Peace

What do you think the Lord meant when He said, “There has been a day of calling, but the time has come for a day of choosing?” How many people did the Lord say should be called to go to Jackson County, Missouri? (see D&C 103:30) How many actually made the journey? Many were called. Few responded. What did the Lord discover about those who responded? What do priesthood leaders learn about men and women who accept calls after they have served for a period of time? What promises does the Lord make to the Saints if they will use their power to restore peace to Missouri and to all the world?

Doctrine and Covenants Section 104

Historical Background

The concept of the United Firm, or the United Order, was established in March of 1832. Its purpose was to united men who were in private business. The profits from their businesses would be brought together to assist the Church in various capacities but most especially with publishing Church literature (see D&C 78). On 10 April 1834, members of the United Firm met to dissolve the group and distribute the funds that had been accumulated. This action was taken because of the great debts that were owed by the Church and by the United Firm. Great efforts were made to circulate among the members to get donations, but the condition of the members was desperate. Many were in debt. Members living in Missouri were in impossibly difficult circumstances financially and in every other way. The Church, it can be safely said, was hanging by a thread. This revelation explains how the United Firm was to be dissolved and how the assets connected to it were to be distributed.

D&C 104:1-10 The End of the United Order

What reasons did the Lord give for ending the united order? How does this help us understand why blessings we have been promised might be withheld? What can we do to retain the blessings the Lord has promised?

D&C 104:11-18 The Lord’s Way of Providing for the Poor

If the Church was not to follow the united order, what were they to do? What does the Lord mean when He says, “organize yourselves and appoint every man his stewardship?” How is this idea different from the concept of the united order? If the Church organizes itself in this way, what blessings are promised? How is it possible that the poor can be cared for when there are so many?

D&C 104:19-46 Assignment of Stewardships

In these verses, the Lord explains what each member of the former united order would be responsible for as an individual. What was Sidney Rigdon’s responsibility? (verses 20-23) Martin Harris? (24-26) Frederick G. Williams and Oliver Cowdery? (27-33) John Johnson? (34-38) Newel K. Whitney? (39-42) Joseph Smith, Jr.? (43-46).

D&C 104:47-53 A New United Order

The previous united order, or united firm, grouped men and their resources together. The new united order would separate men and make them accountable as individuals before the Lord. Yet, they would be able to combine their resources to help the poor. Find the words “commandment,” “business,” and “covenant,” in these verses. How has the Lord tried to bless those who have businesses through covenants and commandments?

D&C 104:54-86 A New Privilege to Organize Yourselves

The United Order was the highest of laws under which the Lord’s people could live. It is the law of the Celestial Kingdom (see D&C 78:3-7). The Church was not ready to live this law. A new form of the United Order was put into place. It made individuals rather than groups of people accountable before the Lord for funding the Church and caring for the poor. These verses explain the new order of things. What is the purpose of this new organization? (see verses 54-59) How shall the money that is collected be secured? (60-66) Who determines how the money is supposed to be used? (67-71) What if there is someone in need? How does he receive the money? (72-77) Some Church leaders were in debt because they had tried to help the Church financially. How were they do get out of debt? (78-85) What promise does the Lord give to those who are faithful to this new counsel? (86)

Doctrine and Covenants Section 103

Historical Background

On February 22, 1834, Joseph Smith received an eye-witness report from Church officers concerning the conditions of Church members in Missouri. He learned of the persecution of the members and of their terrible circumstances. They had been robbed and beaten and, in some instances, killed. After receiving this report, Joseph received a revelation. Heber C. Kimball wrote, “Brother Joseph received a revelation concerning the redemption of Zion, part of which remains yet to be fulfilled. He sent messengers to the east and to the north, to the west and to the south, to gather up the elders. And, he gathered together as many of the brethren as he conveniently could, with what means they could spare, to go up to Zion to render all the assistance that we could to our afflicted brethren. We gathered clothing and other necessaries to carry up to our brethren and sisters who had been plundered. And putting our horses to the wagons and taking our firelocks and ammunition, we started on our journey, leaving only Oliver Cowdery, Sidney Rigdon, and a few aged workmen who were engaged at the Temple. So that there were very few men left in Kirtland” (Heber C. Kimball Journal, February 1834, Church Archives).

This group would be known as Zion’s Camp. Eventually, 205 people would join up with this group. Their plan was to arm the men who were in it and join with local government officials to help the Saints reclaim their property and bring justice to those who had broken the law.

D&C 103:1-5 Why Have They Suffered?

Why had the Saints in Jackson County, Missouri, suffered so much? How could they prevent this suffering in the future? How has hearkening to the counsel of the Lord prevented suffering in your own life?

D&C 103:6-14 The Salt of the Earth

When are Church members like good salt? When are they like salt that is not good for anything? What promise does the Lord make to those who obey? What promise does he make to those who do not obey?

D&C 103:15-21 A Promise to the Faithful

Who shall lead the members of the Church back to Jackson County to help Church members? What promise does the Lord make to those who follow this man?

D&C 103:22-28 Gather Together in Zion

What did the Lord instruct Joseph to do in order that the people in Jackson County could have their property and possessions given back to them? Why would it be important to gather wise men? Why would they need money? Why should these men not be afraid?

D&C 103:29-35 Gather Hundreds

What direction did the Lord give Joseph concerning the number of men who should go to Jackson County? Cross-reference: D&C 136:1-3; Exodus 18:21, 25-26.

D&C 103:36-40 The Conditions of Victory

What were the Lord’s conditions of victory? What did the men who were going to Missouri have to do in order to receive the Lord’s blessings and triumph over their enemies? What must Church members do to have freedom today?

Doctrine and Covenants Section 102

Historical Background

This section is different from the majority of the sections in the Doctrine and Covenants. It is not a “revelation” in the traditional sense. It consists of the minutes of a meeting. It shows the decisions that were made in the meeting and the rules that would govern the actions of the high council. February 17, 1834, is the date of the organization of the Kirtland high council. Another high council, in Missouri, would be organized on July 7, 1834. These councils rarely came together to hear criminal cases. However, they did convene to hear matters that would be settled today by civil courts. Of these councils the Prophet Joseph wrote, “It was not the order of heaven in ancient councils to plead for or against the guilty, as in our judicial courts (so called); but that every councilor, when he arose to speak, should speak precisely according to the evidence, and according to the teaching of the Spirit of the Lord, that no councilor should attempt to screen the guilty when his guilt was manifest” (Kirtland Council Minute Book, p. 30).

D&C 102:1-5 A Standing Council for the Church

In these verses, the following questions are answered: Who made these decisions? What decisions did they make? Who was voted to become part of the first high council? What were their duties? Notice that the council was not able to meet without at least one member of the presidency present (see verse 1).

D&C 102:6-7 Voted

The word “voted” appears in this section frequently. It marks a point of decision in the council. It means that the majority of the members present voted to approve a proposal. The details of the proposal follow after the word “voted.” In verses 6 and 7 the proposal has to do with the number of council members who must be present in order to conduct the business of the council.

D&C 102:8 Filling Vacancies in the Council

What were the procedures for filling vacancies in the high council? How are these procedures carried out today?

D&C 102:9-18 Council Procedures

According to verses 9-11, who presides when the high council meets? Verses 12-14 explain how order is kept. How would this procedure insure that there would be reverence and respect in the council? In verses 15-18, a system is presented to protect the Church and the person who is being judged by the council. How is this system different from civil courts today? What is the value of conducting the affairs of the council in this manner?

D&C 102:19-23 A Decision According to Understanding

What procedure is followed to make a correct decision? What is built into the procedure to make sure that the decisions are right? How does this procedure protect the person being judged and the Church?

D&C 102:24-29 Establishing Councils in Distant Locations

Who has authority to create new high councils (according to the revelation)? How are new high councils created today? Keep in mind that this revelation was given when there were only two organized stakes of the Church. Most members lived far from other Church units in branches.

D&C 102:30-34 Appeals

Suppose a person is judged by a high council and wants to appeal the decision. What can they do? Who may a person appeal to today, if he does not agree with the decision of the local high council? Invite a member of a stake presidency to speak about these procedures today and the feelings he has as he participates in such councils.

Doctrine and Covenants Section 101

Historical Background

A “secret constitution” was established by enemies of the Church in Missouri. It promoted violence against the Church and its members and ordered that the printing office, the general store operated by Church members and all other business enterprises be discontinued. When the members refused, mob violence broke out. Church-owned businesses were destroyed and men were tarred and feathered. Church members were forced to sign an agreement that they would leave Jackson County by 1 January 1834. Mormons applied for help from the government. When the enemies of the Church became aware of this, the violence against the Church intensified. Yet nothing was done by the government to defend them. The ultimate demonstration of violence came on 4 November 1833, when a fight between the members and the mobsters resulted in death on both sides. In the face of all this danger and confusion, the Lord gave instruction to the Church, assuring them that if they would obey His word, all would turn out well.

D&C 101:1-10 They Must Needs Be Chastened

What reasons did the Lord give for the terrible persecution that the members of the Church were suffering? What assurances did He give them if they would remain faithful? What lesson for modern Church members is to be learned from the experience of the Saints in Missouri?

D&C 101:11-23 The Lord’s Will Concerning Zion

Zion, in the context of these verses, is Jackson County, Missouri. What promises does the Lord make to those who live there, those whom he calls “all mine Israel”? Despite all that has happened, the Lord still holds out great promises to the Saints if they will remain faithful. What lesson should you learn in your own circumstances when you face times of trial?

D&C 101:24-36 Blessings in the Millennial Reign of Christ

These verses refer to conditions that will exist during the Millennium, or the time when Christ will reign personally upon the earth. What questions will be answered during that time? Why would this be a glorious time to be upon the earth? How would this vision of the future make the present easier to bear?

D&C 101:37-42 The Salt of the Earth

What must a person do to be considered by the Lord to be the salt of the earth? How does a member of the Church become as “salt that has lost its savor”? What message is the Lord giving to the persecuted Saints in Jackson County, Missouri?

D&C 101:43-62 A Parable: the Watchman on the Tower

As you read this parable, try to determine what the meaning of the symbols might be. Who is the nobleman? What is the spot of ground? What are the twelve olive trees? Who are the watchmen? What is the tower? What is the hedge? What did the servants do that caused the kingdom to be lost? How does this parable apply to the Saints in Zion? How does it apply to the Latter-day Saints today?

D&C 101:63-75 Gather to Zion

Remember the extreme hardships and terror that have been inflicted upon the Saints in Jackson County. As you read these verses, ask yourself how you would respond. What is the Lord asking the Saints to do? What promise does He make if the Saints will believe Him and trust that what He asks them to do will result in good things? What commandments has the Lord given through His prophets that you may not have kept? Why should we trust the Lord?

D&C 101:76-80 The Constitution of the United States

What important principles does the Lord reveal about the U. S. Constitution and the framers of that document? Why should we have reverence for that Document today?

D&C 101:81-95 Ask Government Leaders for Help

Who did the Lord say the Saints should “importune” for help? What was the order? Why that order? What would happen if the leaders of governments did not help according to the law? What did the Lord promise the Saints He would do if they followed this pattern?

D&C 101:96-101 Hold On to What You Have

Remember, the mobs in Jackson County had forced the Saints to sign an agreement that they would leave the area, together with their possessions. What did the Lord say concerning that agreement? What was His expectation concerning the lands and holdings of the Saints in Jackson County? What important principles does this revelation teach us about the Lord? What is He willing to do in behalf of those who keep His commandments? Cross-reference: D&C 58:30-33.

Dcotrine and Covenants Section 100

Historical Background

In October 1833, Joseph Smith and Sidney Rigdon went with Freeman Nickerson to preach the gospel in Canada. They returned about a month later. While Joseph was separated from his family, he was very concerned and asked the Lord to watch over them and to let him know if they were alright. In his journal, Joseph wrote, “Came Saturday the 12th to the house of father Nickerson. I feel very well in my mind. The Lord is with us, but I have much anxiety about my family, etc.” (Joseph Smith Diary, Church Archives.) On 4 November, 1833, Joseph arrived at his home. In his journal he wrote, “Left Buffalo, New York, at 8 o’clock A.M. and arrived at home Monday, the 4th at 10 A.M. Found my family all well, according to the promise of the Lord, for which blessings I feel to thank His holy name” (Joseph Smith Journal, Church Archives. Spelling and punctuation in both quotations modernized).

D&C 100:1-2 Your Families Are Well

What important things did the Lord communicate to Joseph and Sidney while they were away serving their mission to Canada?

D&C 100:3-8 I Have Much People in This Place

What did the Lord reveal to Joseph and Sidney concerning the people they would meet in Canada? What commandments did he give them that apply to those who serve as missionaries today? Cross-reference: D&C 84:85.

D&C 100:9-12 The Calling of Sidney Rigdon

What word did the Lord use to describe what Sidney Rigdon was to be in relationship to Joseph Smith? What was Joseph Smith to be in relationship to Sidney Rigdon? Cross-reference: Exodus 4:10-16.

D&C 100:13-17 The Members in Zion (Jackson County, Missouri)

Orson Hyde and John Gould had been sent to Missouri to tell the Saints what they should do to be compensated for their losses from the mobs. What did the Lord tell the Prophet Joseph about these men and the Saints in Missouri? How do the things He told them apply to faithful Saints today?

Doctrine and Covenants Section 99

Historical Background

If the revelations in the Doctrine and Covenants were placed sequentially, Section 99 would be between Sections 83 and 84. The date was incorrectly established as August 1833 rather than the correct date of August 1832. John Murdock had been part of the Campbellite movement in the Kirtland area and was baptized by Parley P. Pratt in November 1830. His wife, Julia, died in April 1831, leaving him to care for three children. He spent a year (June 1831-June 1832) serving the Church in various capacities in Missouri. Of this particular section of the Doctrine and Covenants, John wrote: “I then continued with the church preaching to them and strengthening them and regaining my health till the month of August [1832] when I received the Revelation [Section 99], at which time I immediately commenced to arrange my business and provide for my children and sent them up to the Bishop in Zion, which I did by the hand of Brother Caleb Baldwin in September [1832] I have him 10 dollars a head for carrying up my three eldest children” (John Murdock Journal, Church Archives).’

John remarried. He went through the Missouri persecutions. He served as the bishop of Nauvoo from 1842 to 1844. He crossed the plains with an early pioneer company and served as a bishop in Salt Lake City. In his later years he was ordained a patriarch and lived in Lehi, Utah. Shortly before he died, he moved to Beaver, Utah, where he passed away on 23 December 1871.

D&C 99:1-5 My Servant John

What promises were made to John Murdock when the Lord called him to serve this mission to the “eastern countries” [the Eastern United States]? Cross-reference: D&C 84:35-38.

D&C 99:6-8 “After a few years”

What counsel did the Lord give John concerning his three children whose mother had passed away? What blessing was promised to him if he remained faithful? What promises has the Lord made you if you remain faithful, even in times of difficulty? Cross-reference: D&C 76:51-70.

Doctrine and Covenants Section 98

Historical Background

Jackson County Missouri was 1,000 miles from Kirtland, Ohio. In 1833, communication systems consisted of mail that was carried by men riding horses or perhaps teams of horses pulling stage coaches or some other form of similar transportation. Joseph Smith could not have known the extent of the difficulties being faced by the Saints in Missouri. Section 98 is a response to the understanding that Joseph could only have had by revelation. The Church in Missouri was suffering intense persecution and the members had been asked to leave. This revelation answers the questions Joseph had in response to the difficulties.

D&C 98:1-3 Wait Patiently

Think of a time of crisis you may have faced in your own life. How would you respond to the Lord’s words in these verses?

D&C 98:4-10 The Law of the Land

What important principles does the Lord reveal concerning the laws of the land? What standard does the Lord set for us to know whether laws are good or evil? What standard does he set for men who are elected to public service?

D&C 98:11-18 Be Not Afraid

What principles will the Saints in Missouri have to observe to receive the promised blessings of the Lord? What does the Lord say about “hearts” in these verses? What do hearts have to do with the Lord’s promised blessings?

D&C 98:19-22 The Lord Is Not Well Pleased

Why is the Lord not pleased with the Saints in Kirtland, Ohio? As you examine your own heart, what things would the Lord be pleased with?

D&C 98:23-38 Conditions that Lead to War

Under what circumstances will the Lord justify his people going to war? What steps need to be taken first before people go to war?

D&C 98:39-48 Repentance and Forgiveness

As you read through these verses pay attention to the all forms of the words “repentance,” and “forgiveness.” What important principles are taught by the Lord concerning these words? Remember that the Lord uses the word “enemies” when speaking about these principles. How would your life be different if you treated your enemies the way this revelation suggests?

Doctrine and Covenants Section 97

Historical Background

On July 23, 1833, the Saints in Jackson County, Missouri, were forced to sign an agreement that they would leave the area. This was a staggering blow to the members who had moved there. Their expectation was that Independence, Missouri, would be the cite for the New Jerusalem, the City of Zion, the place where the Lord Himself would reign during the millennium. This revelation, dated August 2nd, 1833, continues to give encouragement to the Saints in Missouri and assures them that, if they will keep the commandments the Lord gives them, they will have the blessings He has promised. The issues addressed in this revelation are: the Lord’s feelings about the School of the Prophets in Missouri, and the construction of a temple there.

D&C 97:1-5 Blessings upon the Righteous

What blessings does the Lord pronounce upon the righteous? According to His own words, why does He show mercy to those who are meek? What can you do to receive the Lord’s mercy?

D&C 97:6-9 The Ax at the Root of the Tree

What would some members have to do before the Lord would show them mercy? Think of the difficulties that the members of the Church faced in Jackson County. What promise does the Lord make to them if they are faithful? Remember, they had already signed an agreement that they would leave the area. Why would this revelation be a test of faith for some members? What tests of faith has the Lord given you?

D&C 97:10-17 The Temple in Zion

How was the temple construction to be funded? What promises did the Lord make to the “pure in heart” when the temple was built? What blessings have come to you because you have prepared yourself to go to the temple?

D&C 97:18-28 Blessings and Curses upon Zion

The people in Zion (Jackson County, Missouri) had suffered terrible persecution. They were on the verge of being removed from the area. What blessings did the Lord promise them if they were faithful? What curses did he promise them if they were not faithful? When have you received promises from the Lord when things seemed hopeless? How has the Lord blessed you in those times?

Doctrine and Covenants Section 96

Historical Background

The concept of gathering to Zion, in the early days of the Church, meant that people should come to the place where the leaders of the Church and many members were already gathered. In the case of Section 96, the gathering place was Kirtland. If the Saints were being asked to gather to Kirtland, there would need to be sufficient land to live on. Furthermore, as other gathering places would be established, land would have to be purchased by the Church to provide those who were gathering a place to build homes and raise crops. Section 96 establishes the pattern for this type of project. One of the pieces of land that was being considered for purchase in the Kirtland area belonged to a man named Peter French. The council that was assembled to determine how to deal with Mr. French and his property could not come up with a solution. Therefore, the matter was taken to the Lord.

The “order” spoken of in this revelation is the United Firm, or the United Order. It should be remembered that the purpose of this organization was to explore business opportunities that the leaders of the Church might engage in for the benefit of the Church, to provide financial resources that would fund temples, missionary work, and provide for the families of Church leaders.

D&C 96:1-5 Who Should Deal with Mr. French?

Who was designated by the Lord to work with Mr. French for the purchase of his land? What was the land to be used for? How would the purchase of this land ultimately bless the Church and all people everywhere? What purposes are served when the Church buys property today? How have you been blessed because Church leaders continue to follow this pattern?

D&C 96:6-9 John Johnson Becomes a Member of the Order

Why was John Johnson chosen to become a member of the United Firm, or the United Order? What blessings was he promised if he remained faithful? How are these blessings like your own if you remain faithful?

Doctrine and Covenants Section 95

Historical Background

The commandment had been given to the Church to build a Temple in Kirtland, Ohio (see Section 88). A committee was appointed to get contributions for the construction of the building and to supervise the project. These men were Hyrum Smith, Reynolds Cahoon, and Jared Carter. The revelation indicates that the First Presidency would have the actual building revealed to them so that they may know how to proceed. Frederick G. Williams, a member of the First Presidency, wrote:

“Joseph received the word of the Lord for him to take his two counselors, Williams and Rigdon, and come before the Lord; and He would show them the plan, or model, of the house to be built. We went upon our knees, called on the Lord, and the building appeared within viewing distance, I being the first to discover it. Then all of us viewed it together. After we had taken a good look at the exterior, the building seemed to come right over us, and the makeup of the hall [the main hall on the first floor of the temple] seems to coincide with what I there saw to a minutia” (Recollection of Truman O. Angel, Temple Architect; Truman O. Angel journal (typescript), Brigham Young University Library, Special Collections; spelling and punctuation modernized).

Concerning the Kirtland Temple, Truman O. Angel wrote a letter to John Taylor, in 1885. He said, “F.G. Williams came into the Temple about the time the main hall 1st floor was ready for dedication. He was asked, how does the house look to you. He answered that it looked to him like the model he had seen. He said President Joseph Smith, Sidney Rigdon and himself were called to come before the Lord and the model was shown them. He said the vision of the Temple was thus shown them and he could not see the difference between it and the House as built” (Letter from Truman O. Angell to President John Taylor, 11 March 1885, Church archives).

D&C 95:1-6 The Lord’s Chastisement

What do these verses teach us about love and chastisement? Why would the Lord chasten those he loves? The Lord asked that “mine house” be built for “preparation.” What was the preparation he would give “mine apostles”? Why were some called, but not chosen? What blessings do we receive as we regularly attend the temple in our generation?

D&C 95:7-10 An Endowment of Power

What did the Lord intend to give the faithful members of the Church? What was keeping them from receiving this blessing? What blessings is the Lord trying to give you? What are you doing that might be keeping Him from giving you those blessings?

D&C 95:11-17 The Love of the Father

What important principles do we learn about the love of the Father? How is the Father showing love in these verses? What was the purpose of the Kirtland Temple? How is its purpose different from temples that are built today? How does the Father show love to you as you attend the temple?

Doctrine and Covenants Section 94

Historical Background

In Mid-1833, there were two great issues confronting the Church: the construction of the Temple in Kirtland, and the publication of the inspired revision of the King James Bible. Section 94 is one of three revelations, along with Sections 95 and 97, that address these compelling needs. The perspective of the Lord on these matters shows that He is willing to bless the people with His physical presence if they will obey His commandments and directives. Difficulties were experienced by the Saints in Jackson County, Missouri, during this time because the Saints did not follow the commandments given them by the Lord through the Prophet Joseph. Still, there is a feeling in the revelations that if the Saints will repent and comply with the Lord’s directives they will be blessed.

A building committee is established in this revelation: Hyrum Smith (age 33), Reynolds Cahoon (43), and Jared Carter (32). The Prophet Joseph was 27 years old at the time.

D&C 94:1-9 A Building for the Presidency

What are the details the Lord gives concerning the building that will be constructed for the Presidency of the Church? Why would the Presidency need a building? What activities were they supposed engage in when they were in the building? What buildings does the Church have today that are used for these purposes?

D&C 94:10-12 A Building for Printing

What things were to be printed in the building dedicated to printing? What publications does the Church print today? Why do they print these things?

D&C 94:13-17 The Building Committee

Who were the three men called to be the building committee? What ere their duties? Why would the Lord indicate that they should receive land for homes in Kirtland?

Doctrine and Covenants Section 93

Historical Background

Joseph Smith was working on the inspired revision of the King James Bible. As he did so, new light and new understanding would be revealed to him. In this revelation, Joseph is working on John chapter 1. Using that as a springboard, a flood of doctrinal understanding was revealed. Up until the 1981 edition of the Doctrine and Covenants, the person called John in this revelation was referred to as John the Apostle. Others have felt that the John spoken of was John the Baptist. The most recent edition of the Doctrine and Covenants does not address the identity of the person called John.

D&C 93:1 Seeing the Lord

What must a person do to see the Lord and know that He is? What adjustments do you need to make in your life so that you might have this blessing?

D&C 93:2-5 The Father and the Son Are One

According to these verses, how are the Father and the Son one? Cross-reference: John 17:20-23; 2 Nephi 31:11-21.

D&C 93:6-14 The Lord’s Titles

John’s record uses different titles when referring to Jesus Christ. What are those titles and what do they mean? How is the Lord the Word, the Light, the Creator, the Only Begotten, and the Son of God?

D&C 93:15-20 Grace for Grace

Jesus received grace for grace (see D&C 93:12-13). This means he received knowledge and intelligence from God a little at a time “until he received a fulness” (D&C 93:13). What happens to us if we “receive grace for grace”? How do we receive grace for grace? Cross-reference: 2 Nephi 28:29-30.

D&C 93:21-40 Light and Truth

What is truth? What is the Spirit of Truth? Are men born good or born evil? (See verse 38.) How are you like God already? How can you become like Him forever? Cross-reference: D&C 132:37.

D&C 93:41-53 Counsel to the First Presidency and the Bishop

The Lord gives counsel to Frederick G. Williams (verses 41-43, 52), Sidney Rigdon (verses 44, 51), Joseph Smith (verses 45-49, 52-53), Newel K. Whitney (verse 50). What common counsel does he give to these prominent Church leaders? Why would it be good for you to follow this counsel? (See verse 49.)

Dcotrine and Covenants Section 92

Historical Background

In March of 1832, the Lord inspired the Prophet Joseph to create the United Firm. This was to be an organization of members of the Church who would develop businesses whose profits could be used to strengthen the Church financially, and to provide for the poor (see D&C 78:11; 82:11). Prominent leaders of the Church were expected to become part of the United Firm. Sometimes the name of this group is United Order. They appear to be synonymous expressions to the Prophet Joseph. Frederick G. Williams had recently been called as a member of the First Presidency. This revelation directs him to become part of the United Firm.

D&C 92:1-2 Be a Lively Member

What were those who were already members of the United Order, or United Firm, expected to do? What was Frederick G. Williams expected to do? What are we to understand when the Lord says, “What I say unto one I say unto all?” What can we do to assist in building up the kingdom of God financially?

Doctrine and Covenants Section 91

Historical Background

Scripture becomes scripture because people in authority declare it to be so. Religious leaders for millennia have tried to define what scripture is. There are texts which have become part of the collection defined as scripture. These texts are part of the “canon.” The word canon means “ruler” like a straight-edge device used for making lines that are perfectly straight. Well-intending persons have tried to select texts that are consistent with the doctrine taught by apostles, prophets, and the Savior Himself. When they come across texts that appear questionable in their authorship or origin, they are generally rejected. The Apocrypha is a collection of texts that are rejected by some faiths and accepted by others. For example, the Jewish faith has books that fall under this definition, as do Christians. Currently, there are fifteen additional texts that appear in the Bible used by the Catholic Church that do not appear in other Christian Bibles.

As Joseph Smith was working on his inspired revision of the King James Bible, he wondered about these writings and went to the Lord.

D&C 91:1-6 The Apocrypha

What questions does the Lord answer about the Apocrypha? What must a person do to be enlightened by the writings that are called the Apocrypha? Cross-reference: Moroni 10:4-5.

Doctrine and Covenants Section 90

Historical Background

Jesse Gause, who had served as a counselor to Joseph Smith, was excommunicated in December 1832. The vacancy was not filled until this revelation was given in March 1833. This revelation shows an evolution in the understanding of the office of the First Presidency. The counselors in the First Presidency are given authority “equal with [Joseph Smith] in holding the keys of this last kingdom” (D&C 90:6). After this revelation was received, Sidney Rigdon and Frederick G. Williams were ordained by the laying on of hands as counselors in the “Presidency of the high Priesthood” on 18 March 1833, in a meeting of the School of the Prophets.

D&C 90:1-5 The Oracles of God

What does the word “oracles” mean? See footnote 4a. What authority did the Lord give Joseph Smith? What is the relationship between Joseph Smith and “the oracles of God?”

D&C 90:6-10 The Administration of the Gospel

What authority is given to Sidney Rigdon and Frederick G. Williams, counselors in the First Presidency? What are they to do with this authority?

D&C 90:9 Scripture Analysis

That through [Joseph Smith’s] administration [the counselors in the First Presidency] may receive the word [revelations to direct the Church], and through [the counselors’] administration the word [revelations] may go forth unto the ends of the earth.

D&C 90:11 That Day

What is “that day” spoken of in this verse? See D&C 90:9-10.

D&C 90:12-16 The Duties of the First Presidency

According to these verses, what are the duties of the First Presidency of the Church?

D&C 90:17-18 Counsel to the First Presidency

What counsel does the Lord give the First Presidency?

D&C 90:19-31 Direction from the Prophet

Who are the people the Lord gives specific direction to? What are their duties and callings? Memorize verse 24. In verse 25, the Brethren are cautioned to “let [their] families be small.” In the context of the verse it means that they should be careful not to have too many persons who are not members of their families living in their homes.

D&C 90:32-37 Counsel to Zion

Remember that Zion was to be the New Jerusalem. What counsel does the Lord give to those who live in Zion (Independence, Missouri) in anticipation of the day when the Lord would be with them? How can this counsel help us prepare for a similar blessing?

Doctrine and Covenants Section 89

Historical Background

The priesthood leaders of the Church gathered together in the School of the Prophets, as commanded by Section 88. On the 27th of February, 1833, during one of the meetings that took place on the upper level of the Newel K. Whitney store in Kirtland, the revelation known as the Word of Wisdom was received. Brigham Young spoke about the circumstances that led to the revelation. “When they assembled together in this room after breakfast, the first they did was to light their pipes, and, while smoking, talk about the great things of the kingdom, and spit all over the room, and as soon as the pipe was out of their mouths a large chew of tobacco would then be taken. Often when the Prophet entered the room to give the school instructions he would find himself in a cloud of tobacco smoke. This, and the complaints of his wife at having to clean so filthy a floor, made the Prophet think upon the matter, and he inquired of the Lord relating to the conduct of the Elders in using tobacco, and the revelation known as the Word of Wisdom was the result” (Journal of Discourses, 12:158).

The restrictions presented in this revelation were not observed by early members of the Church for many years. Gradually, over time, the members were encouraged. The first connection between obedience to the Word of Wisdom and temple recommends occurred in 1902, but priesthood leaders were encouraged to be liberal in their interpretation of the commandment. Finally, in 1921, President Heber J. Grant made absolute adherence to the Word of Wisdom a condition for receiving a temple recommend. That interpretation of the policy has been in force since that time.

D&C 89:1-3 Greetings

Who is the revelation addressed to? Who does the Lord say can live according to its priniciples?

D&C 89:4 Evils and Designs

Why did the Lord give this revelation to the Church?

D&C 89:5-9 Prohibitions

What did the Lord reveal about wine, strong drinks, tobacco, and “hot drinks”? Church leaders placed emphasis on the Word of Wisdom, but did not use water as part of the sacrament until 1912. Cross-reference: D&C 27:2. In the Church Handbook of Instructions we read, “The only official interpretation of “hot drinks” (D&C 89:9) in the Word of Wisdom is the statement made by early Church leaders that the term “hot drinks” means tea and coffee. Members should not use any substance that contains illegal drugs. Nor should members use harmful or habit-forming substances except under the care of a competent physician” (page 185).

D&C 89:10-17 Herbs, Animal Flesh, Grains

What does the Lord say about herbs, “flesh of beasts,” and grains? When should they be used? When should we abstain from using them? Remember that for temple recommend purposes, obedience to the Word of Wisdom pertains only to coffee, tea, alcohol, tobacco, and harmful, illegal substances.

D&C 89:18-21 The Promise

What are the promises given by the Lord to those who “keep and do these sayings” (obey the Word of Wisdom), “walking in obedience to the commandments” (keeping the commandments God has given his children, in addition to the Word of Wisdom)? Cross-reference: Exodus 12:21-30.

Doctrine and Covenants Section 88

Historical Background

This revelation was received two days after the “prophecy on war” known as Section 87. This revelation is called “the Lord’s message of peace to us” (see section heading). The complete text of the revelation was received on three different days: December 27-28 (verses 1-126), and January 3, 1833 (verses 127-141). Verses 1-126 deal more particularly with final judgment. They are an extraordinary expansion upon information presented in D&C 76; 1 Corinthians 15, and various chapters of the Revelation of St. John the Divine. Included in this revelation is a reference to a “solemn assembly.” Concerning this assembly, the Prophet wrote, “All who are prepared, and are sufficiently pure to abide the presence of the Savior, will see Him in the solemn assembly” (History of the Church 2:309-310).

Verses 127-141 introduce three two additional topics that will be significant in the history of the Church. First, “the house of God.” The idea is mentioned in verse 119, but the details do not appear until after verse 127. The expression “temple” was not used for this structure. However, the Kirtland Temple was the structure that was created in fulfillment of the commandment to build a house to the Lord. Second, the school of the prophets. This revelation instructed that there needed to be some form of instruction given to the leaders of the Church. It was called by several titles over the years: School of the Prophets, School of the Elders, and “school for mine apostles.” It is essentially the beginning of the Sunday School and, eventually, the Church Educational System with its seminary and institute programs, and institutions of higher education.

The instructions in these verses were intended to prepare those who had sanctified themselves from sin to see the face of God. Zebedee Coltrin wrote, “On the 23rd January, 1833, when we were all together, Joseph having given instructions, and while engaged in silent prayer, kneeling, with our hands uplifted each on praying in silence, no one whispered above his breath, a personage walked through the room from East to west, and Joseph asked if we saw him. I saw him and suppose the others did, and Joseph answered, “That is Jesus, the Son of God, our elder brother.” Afterward Joseph told us to resume our former position in prayer, which we did. Another person came through. He was surrounded as with a flame of fire. He [Brother Coltrin] experienced a sensation that it might destroy the tabernacle as it was of consuming fire of great brightness. The Prophet Joseph said this was the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ. I saw Him. . . . This appearance was so grand and overwhelming that it seemed I should melt down at His presence. And the sensation was so powerful that it thrilled through my whole system and I felt it in the marrow of my bones. The Prophet Joseph said, “Brethren, now you are prepared to be Apostles of Jesus Christ, for you have seen both the Father and the Son” (Zebedee Coltrin Journal, Church Archives; spelling and punctuation modernized).

D&C 88:1-5 The Holy Spirit of Promise

What is the function of the Holy Spirit of Promise? “The Holy Ghost is also referred to as the Holy Spirit of Promise. To be sealed by the Holy Spirit of Promise means that the Holy Ghost confirms that righteous acts, ordinances, and covenants are acceptable to God. The Holy Spirit of Promise testifies to the Father that the saving ordinances have been performed properly and that the covenants associated with them have been kept. . . . Breaking covenants may remove the sealing” (Preach My Gospel, p. 91).

D&C 88:6-13 The Light of Christ

What is the light of Christ? See Bible Dictionary, p. 725.

D&C 88:14-17 The Soul of Man

What is the soul of man? What is meant by the redemption of the soul? How does this redemption take place? Cross-reference: 2 Nephi 2:6-10.

D&C 88:18-33 The Celestial Kingdom

The word “quickened” in these verses means “resurrected.” As you read these verses, list the things that are required of persons who will live on the celestialized earth forever. Why is it important for us to receive this gift God has given us? (See verse 33.)

D&C 88:34-61 Law, Kingdoms, and Light

What is the relationship between law and kingdoms of glory? See D&C 88:34-39. What is the relationship between God and his creations? See D&C 88:40-50. What is the relationship between seeing the countenance of the Lord and the kingdoms of the earth? See D&C 88:51-61. Summarize the relationship between law, kingdoms and seeing the face of the Lord.

D&C 88:62-65 Ask What Is Expedient

What does the word “expedient” mean? Why should we be careful to ask for things that are expedient?

D&C 88:66-69 Sanctify Yourselves

What purpose is giving for sanctifying ourselves? What will happen if we do? Why, according to verse 69, will help us to sanctify ourselves?

D&C 88:70-86 Preparation for a Solemn Assembly

Remember that the point of the solemn assembly was to see the Lord. How would the things listed in these verses prepare a person to be in the presence of the Lord Jesus Christ?

D&C 88:87-117 The Reason for the Solemn Assembly

In these verses, the Lord recounts the events that will happen in connection with His glorious coming and the end of the world. After the testimony of the Lord’s servants has been given to everyone on the earth, what other kinds of testimonies will the Lord reveal? What will happen when the first angel sounds his trumpet? See D&C 88:94-98. What will happen when the second, third, fourth, fifth and sixth angels sound their trumpets? See D&C 88:99-109. What will happen when the seventh angel sounds his trumpet? See D&C 88:110-117. Why, according to all that the Lord has revealed in these verses, has He called for a solemn assembly?

D&C 88:118-126 The School of the Prophets

As you look through the list of things the Lord asks those who will attend this school to do, ask yourself, how do all these things contribute to a fine education? How would you be blessed in your efforts to be educated, if you started doing these things?

D&C 88:127-141 The Order of the School of the Prophets

These verses contain the rules given to students on how they should conduct themselves with their fellow students. How would these rules help students be more successful in their studies?

Doctrine and Covenants Section 87

Historical Background

This revelation is commonly called the “prophecy on war.” It was received on Christmas Day, 1832. These are the events that were leading to the American Civil War in 1832:

1. South Carolina concluded that the constitutional provisions of “states rights” gave them authority to nullify any federal regulations that were not in the interest of the citizens of the state.

2. Cotton planters and rice growers became increasingly sensitive to antislavery movements in the northern states.

3. On 24 November 1832, South Carolina adopted an Ordinance of Nullification stating that tariffs would no longer be collected in that state as of 1 February 1833.

In D&C 87:1, the Prophet Joseph calls the action of South Carolina a rebellion. However, he also clarifies that this rebellion will not only lead to a great war in the United States, it will be the beginning of war that will continue until the Second Coming of Christ. See D&C 130:12-13.

This revelation was not included in the canon of Latter-day Saint scripture until 1851, when it was included in the Pearl of Great Price. Later, in 1876, it was included as Section 87 of the Doctrine and Covenants. Brigham Young explained, “It [section 87] was not wisdom to publish it to the world, and it remained in the private escritoire. . . . There are other revelations besides this one, not yet published to the world. In the due time of the Lord, the Saints and the world will be privileged [to have] the revelations that are due to them” (Journal of Discourses, 8:58).

D&C 87:1-3 War Poured Out

According to these verses, what is the sequence of events that leads to war being “poured out upon all nations?” What evidence is there that there is war among all the nations of the earth today?

D&C 87:4-6 A Full End of All Nations

What is the ultimate effect of the war that began in South Carolina? Cross-reference: Revelation 19:11-16.

D&C 87:7-8 Stand Ye in Holy Places

In Daniel 11:31, reference is made to “the abomination that maketh desolate” (Daniel 11:31). This abomination is generally thought to be the placing of pagan gods in the temple at Jerusalem and the ending of the daily sacrifice among the Jews. This happened in 168 B.C., and Jesus prophesied that it would happen again. Cross-reference: Daniel 12:11; Matthew 24:14-15; Revelation 3:11-12; D&C 45:28-32. What are the holy places we can “stand” in? Why is it important that we are not moved from those places when we take a stand?

Doctrine and Covenants Section 86

Historical Background

The first draft of Joseph Smith’s translation of the parable of the wheat and the tares, found in Matthew 13, indicated that the tares would be gathered first. This draft was written sometime between April 7th and June 19th, 1831. Later, in December, the passages were revised so that they were in harmony with D&C 86. Joseph Smith wrote in his journal, “December 6th translating and received a revelation explaining the Parable of the Wheat and the Tares, etc.” (Joseph Smith Journal, Joseph Smith Collection, Church Archives).

D&C 86:1-3 Satan Soweth the Tares

What is the difference between wheat and tares? See Bible Dictionary, page 780. Read Matthew 13:24-30. Use D&C 86:1-3 to answer the following questions: What was the field in Matthew 13:24? Who planted or “sowed” the seed in Matthew 13:24? Who is the enemy that sowed tares in Matthew 13:25? Cross-reference: Revelation 17:5.

D&C 86:4-7 Tares and Wheat Grow Together

Who are the “servants” spoken of in Matthew 13:28? See D&C 86:5. Compare Matthew 13:30 and D&C 86:7. What is the difference? What is the significance of that difference?

D&C 86:8-11 Lawful Heirs of the Priesthood

Read the statements the Lord makes concerning those who have the priesthood in this generation. What do these verses have to do with the parable of the wheat and the tares? Cross-reference: Acts 20:28-35.

Doctrine and Covenants Section 85

Historical Background

This section of the Doctrine and Covenants contains portions of a letter that was sent to William W. Phelps in November 1832. Many of the instructions given in this letter were intended for John Whitmer and were designed to help him more fully understand his duties as Church Historian. Mention is made in the letter concerning a book of the law of God or a book of remembrance. The purpose of this book was to record the revelations related to the law of consecration (section 42 , for example) and provide a listing of members of the Church. Additional clarification was provided to John Whitmer in a letter from Oliver Cowdery in January 1834.

“It is necessary to keep the names of the Saints, & when a child is brought forward to be blessed by the Elders, it is then necessary to take their name upon the Church Record. Put down the name of the man, his place of birth, and when, &c. and also of his family. . . . If he apostatizes write opposite his name that he has. If he begets children after that and they do not come into the Church their names are not known with their brethren in the book of remembrance. The names of the Saints are to be kep in a book that contains the law of God, this is what is meant in Bro. Josephs’ letter. . . . Each family will have its record with the law of the Lord in it; each branch of the Church the same in every city; and each city one general record kept by a general clerk.”

Traditionally, verse 8 of this revelation was thought to refer exclusively to Edward Partridge. Oliver’s 1834 letter clarifies the intent of the remarks.

“Brother Joseph says, that the item in his letter that says, that a man that is called &c. and puts forth his hand to steady the ark of God, does not mean that any one had at the time, but it was given for a caution to those in high standing to be ward, lest they should fall by the shaft of death” (Oliver Cowdery Letter Book, Huntington Library, San Marino, California).

D&C 85:1-5 Policies on Apostates

What is to be done if a person who has entered into the law of consecration by covenant should turn away from that covenant?

D&C 85:6-8 Ark Steadiers

Compare what is said about “one mighty and strong,” with those who want to “steady the ark.” Cross-reference: 2 Samuel 6:6-7.

D&C 85:9-12 Priesthood Holders Who Apostatize

What happens to apostates who hold the priesthood? Cross-reference: Ezra 2:61-62.

Dcotrine and Covenants Section 84

Historical Background

In September 1832, Joseph Smith presented a revelation to the Church of major doctrinal importance. In it the following issues are addressed: building the New Jerusalem in Independence, Missouri; the order of the priesthood; rebelliousness among priesthood leaders, business issues that needed attention. This is the first revelation for the whole Church given since April 1832. Joseph had engaged in the translation of the Bible for much of that time. One of the most significant concepts springing from this revelation is the Oath and Covenant of the Priesthood.

D&C 84:1-5 The New Jerusalem

List all the things that the Lord said concerning the temple in the city New Jerusalem; or, as the Lord called it, the “house.” Why were the Saints asked to build such a structure? In October 1838, the Lord rescinded the commandment to build the house (see D&C 124:49-51).

D&C 84:6-31 A History of the Holy Priesthood

In verses 6-17, the Lord traces the history of the Holy Priesthood from Moses back to Adam. What important things do we learn about the priesthood in these verses? In verses 18-25 an explanation is given concerning the removal of the Holy Priesthood from the children of Israel. Why was it removed? Verses 26-31 explain the power and authority of the Aaronic Priesthood and John the Baptist’s connection to that priesthood. What powers are associated with that priesthood? What important information does the Lord reveal about John the Baptist that was unknown before?

D&C 84:32-45 The Oath and Covenant of the Priesthood

How do men “become” the sons of Moses and Aaron? How do men receive “all that the Father hath?”What happens to those who break the covenant of the priesthood, or those who refuse to receive it? According to verses 43-45, what must all men who receive the priesthood do? Notice the word “receive” in all of its forms in verses 32-45. What must we receive in order for the blessings of the Oath and Covenant of the Priesthood to be granted?

D&C 84:46-53 Light and Darkness

Keep in mind that the words “my,” and “me” refer to the Lord. Read these verses and explain the relationship between the Lord, the Father, and the Spirit. What do these verses help us understand about spiritual light and spiritual darkness?

D&C 84:54-61 Scourge and Judgment upon the Children of Zion

Read these verses carefully and discover what it is that causes the Lord to say that there is a scourge and judgment upon the children of Zion, “even all.” What can be done to remove that scourge? How can the Book of Mormon help remove the scourge?

D&C 84:62-95 To Those who Preach the Gospel

Verses 62-73 speak of the power given to the apostles. What is that power? What do the apostles have to be careful not to do? Verses 74-86 speak of the specific things the apostles must do as they serve. What are they to be concerned about? What should they not worry about? Verses 87-95 give direction to the apostles when their message is accepted and when it is rejected. What does the Lord direct them to do in each case?

D&C 84:96-102 A New Song

Review the “new song” the Lord speaks of in verses 99-102. What is the theme of the song? According to verses 96-98, when will the song be sung? Who will sing it?

D&C 84:103-111 Every Man Shall Go Forth

How is it that missionaries and their families shall be taken care of when they are away preaching the gospel? What is the role of the Aaronic Priesthood in proclaiming the gospel? What is the role of the Melchizedek Priesthood?

D&C 84:112-120 The Bishop and the Rest

How is the responsibility of the bishop (verses 112-116) different from the mission of “the rest of my servants?” (verses 117-120). What is the Lord preparing to do? What can we do to help Him accomplish His purposes?

Dcotrine and Covenants Section 83

Historical Background

The visit of the First Presidency to Independence, Missouri, in April 1832, was to accomplish three things:

• To establish the United Firm in Missouri and coordinate its activities with the Saints in Ohio. This commandment was given in Section 78, and accomplished in Section 82.
• To coordinate the printing projects approved by the Literary Firm (which printed hymnals and periodicals).
• To help local leaders understand and establish the law of consecration and stewardship.

After the revelation was received, there were some questions among the Brethren concerning verse 3. Joseph offered this clarification: “You are bound by the law of the Lord to give a deed, securing to him . . . his own property. . . . If [a member] is found in transgression and should be cut off, out of the church, his inheritance [or his personal property] is his still, and he is delivered over to the buffetings of Satan” (Letter from Joseph Smith to Edward Partridge, 2 May 1833; Joseph Smith Collection, Church Archives).

D&C 83:1-6 Care of Women and Children

Find the words “women,” “children,” “widows,” and “orphans,” in these verses. What does the Lord expect of husbands and priesthood leaders in their relationships with women, children, widows, and orphans? Cross-reference: JST James 1:27.

Doctrine and Covenants Section 82

Historical Background

Section 78, given on 1 March 1832, instructed Joseph Smith and his associates to go to Missouri to council with the Saints. There were about 400 members in Missouri at this time, less than would be in an average sized ward today. There were specific things that needed to take place in Missouri. First, Joseph needed to be sustained as the President of the High Priesthood, as he had been in Ohio; second, hard feelings that existed between prominent Church members needed to be resolved. Minutes from the meeting read as follows:

“Joseph Smith was acknowledged by the high priests in the land of Zion to be president of the high priesthood, according to the commandment and ordination received in Ohio at the conference held in Amherst on January 25, 1832. . . . Brother Sidney Rigdon then stated the items embraced in a revelation received in Ohio [section 78] and the reason why we were commanded to come to this land and sit in council with the high priests here. For particulars of which, read the commandment. . . . All differences were settled and the hearts of all ran together in love. A revelation was then received, through him whom the Church has appointed, on the subject of organization” (Far West Record, p. 24-25; spelling and grammar standardized).

The commandment mentioned in D&C 78 had to do with the establishment of the “United Firm,” which would help raise money for the Church through business ventures. The intent of D&C 82 is to establish a United Firm in Zion, or among the members of the Church in Missouri.

D&C 82:1-7 Watch for the Adversary

Find the words “trespasses,” and “sins,” and “transgressions,” in these verses, in all of their forms. What principles does the Lord teach concerning sin and repentance in these verses? Memorize D&C 82:3.

D&C 82:8-15 A New Commandment

In verse 11, there are names mentioned. These are names of prominent Church leaders. They had been angry with each other. How would the words in verses 8-15 help them get over their anger? How do the covenants we have made with the Lord help us to be faithful to each other? Memorize D&C 82:10. Cross-reference: Isaiah 54:2; 52:1.

D&C 82:16-24 An Everlasting Order

Look for commandments and principles that the Lord gives these men who will work to make money in businesses. How would these principles help business partners be successful today? What does being successful in business have to do with building up the kingdom of God? What does it mean in verse 22 when the Lord says, “make friends with the mammon of unrighteousness?” Cross-reference: Matthew 10:16; D&C 111:10-11.

Dcotrine and Covenants Section 81

Historical Background

By March of 1832, the Church had arrived at a point where it could begin to put into place a portion of the organization that would eventually guide the restoration of the kingdom of God. The first governing quorum to be organized was the First Presidency. In January 1832, the Prophet Joseph was sustained as the “President of the High Priesthood.” This meant that he was the president of all the high priests in the Church. In March of 1832, counselors were selected to form the Presidency of the High Priesthood. By 1834, this quorum of three was known as the First Presidency of the Church. This revelation was originally intended for a man named Jesse Guase. However, he was not faithful in his duties and was replaced by Frederick G. Williams.

D&C 81:1-5 The Keys of the Kingdom

In these verses we discover two important things: first, the authority that is given a counselor in the First Presidency; second, the responsibility of a person in that office. What is the authority and what are the responsibilities of a counselor in the First Presidency? Cross-reference: Isaiah 35:3.

D&C 81:6-7 A Promise

What blessings does the Lord promise the person who faithfully serves as a counselor in the First Presidency? What words in these verses suggest that we can trust that the promise will be kept?

Doctrine and Covenants Section 80

Historical Background

March 1832 was a month filled with important moments in the life of the Prophet Joseph Smith. It was during this month that he received Sections 77-81 of the Doctrine and Covenants. He continued his work on the Inspired Version of the Bible. His adopted twins caught the measles. He was making preparations to visit the members in the Church who went to Missouri. And, on the 24th of March, he was attacked by a mob, which tarred and feathered him, beat him, and attempted to pour acid down his throat. His family was also attacked. The result of this was that the adopted twins died.

This particular revelation pertains to the calling of Stephen Burnett and Eden Smith to serve together as missionaries. The record shows that Brother Burnett left for Ohio with Eden Smith’s father, John, on 22 March 1832. Stephen was 18 at the time. Eden Smith was 26.

D&C 80:1-5 Ye Cannot Go Amiss

What is Stephen supposed to do? Who will he do it with? Where is he supposed to go? What does this expression mean: ye cannot go amiss? What is Stephen supposed to teach? How are these instructions similar to instructions received by missionaries today?

Doctrine and Covenants Section 79

Historical Background

This revelation is a mission call for Jared Carter. When Brother Carter received this call, he was 31 years old and had been married for four and a half years. In his journal for the 12th of March, 1832, he wrote, “I at length went to Hiram [Ohio] to the Seer, to enquire [after] the will of the Lord concerning my ministry the ensuing season. And the word of the Lord came forth that showed that it was His will that I should go forth to the Eastern countries, in theh power of the ordinance wherewith I had been ordained, which was [pertaining] to the high privilege of administering in the name of Jesus Christ; even to seal on earth, and to build up the Church of Christ, and to work miracles in the name of Christ. . . . Now I have received a revelation of the will of the Lord to me, by the mouth of Joseph the Seer, that I should not only preach the gospel from place to place, but from city to city” (Journal of Jared Carter, date mentioned, Church archives).

Jared Carter returned from his mission in October. He noted in his journal: “I have been gone 6 months and 2 days. The Lord permitted me to administer the gospel to 79 souls, . . .” Later, in that same entry, he added, “All that have been baptized while I have been in the regions where I have been in this mission is 98, and many others have been convinced of the word that sooner or later I think will obey the work” (Jared Carter journal; spelling and grammar in both quotations has been modernized).

D&C 79:1 From Place to Place, and from City to City

What is the difference between going from “place to place,” and going from “city to city?” Why would the everlasting gospel represent “glad tidings of great joy?”

D&C 79:2-4 A Crown of Sheaves

How will Jared Carter know what to preach and where to go? What are sheaves? What does the Lord mean when he says Jared will be crowned with sheaves? Why would this message from the Lord cause Jared’s heart to be glad?

Doctrine and Covenants Section 78

Historical Background

Reference is made in this revelation to an “order.” This order was a council of business men which eventually became known as the “United Firm.” The purpose of the firm was to unite the resources of its various members in such a way that profits might be generated and that money from those profits would be given to the Church for the building up of the kingdom of God. This was not the group that administered the law of consecration. That responsibility rested upon the presiding bishop of the Church. This group, sometimes called the “United Order,” was a business venture whose members were the leading officers of the Church. Today the Church has interest in businesses and corporations, farm land and investments. The hope is that there will be profit generated and that the Church will become self-reliant, or as this revelations states, “independent above all other creatures beneath the celestial world” (D&C 78:14). The result of this approach is that the Church is essentially debt-free. All of its buildings are paid for before they are constructed. There are no mortgages that need to be paid. The only fund-raising that Church members become involved in is tithing, which is the great sustaining financial resource of the Church.

D&C 78:1-7 Regulating the Affairs of the Storehouse

As you read these verses, notice the words that indicate what the Lord is trying to accomplish. What does He mean in verse 4 when he says, “Advance the cause?” How can a church with financial stability help its members become “equal” in heavenly and earthly things? Cross-reference: Moses 7:18.

D&C 78:8-16 Financial Independence

Why is the Lord establishing this “order?” What does He hope to accomplish? How will it be accomplished? Why would it be wise for the Church to be “independent above all other creatures beneath the celestial world?” What blessings come to individuals and families as they achieve financial independence? What can you do to achieve financial independence?

D&C 78:17-22 I Will Lead You Along

The Lord commanded Church leaders to unite in a commercial business operation. The intent was to help the Church achieve financial independence. What blessings were promised to those who faithfully followed this council? What is meant by “the riches of eternity?” See verse 18. Why should we receive all that we have with thankfulness? What does it mean to “inherit all things?” See D&C 84:35-38. How are you and your family blessed because the Church is free from debt? What is the Church building like, where you attend meetings? How much time do local Church leaders have to spend raising money to pay off local Church debts? Since we don’t spend any time raising funds to pay Church debts, what should we do with our time?

Doctrine and Covenants Section 77

Historical Background

The Prophet Joseph Smith continued his inspired revision of the King James Bible. This revelation, according to his notes, was a revealed “explanation of the Revelation of St. John.”

D&C 77:1-4 Questions Concerning Revelation 6:4

Revelation 6:4 reads as follows: “And before the throne there was a sea of glass like unto crystal: and in the midst of the throne, and round about the throne, were four beasts full of eyes before and behind.”

Read the answers to the questions in D&C 77:1-4 and put them into your own words. In verse 2A, the word “figurative” is used. What does that mean? In verse 3A what does the word “felicity” mean? As you read verses 1-4, how do they help you understand the symbolism John is using in Revelation 4:6?

D&C 77:5 Questions Concerning Revelation 4:4

Revelation 4:4 reads as follows: “And round about the throne were four and twenty seats: and upon the seats I saw four and twenty elders sitting, clothed in whit raiment; and they had on their heads crowns of gold.”

What is the answer, in your own words, to Joseph’s question in verse 5?

D&C 77:6-7 Questions Concerning Revelation 5:1

Revelation 5:1 reads as follows: “And I saw in the right hand of him that sat on the throne a book written within and on the backside, sealed with seven seals.”

Put the answer the Lord gave to Joseph in verse 6A in your own words. What word in this verse appears to be the most important to you? Why? Remember the answer given in verse 7A. It will be a great key to understanding the whole book of Revelation.

D&C 77:8 Questions Concerning Revelation 7:1

Revelation 7:1 reads as follows: “And after these things I saw four angels standing on the four corners of the earth, holding the four winds of the earth, that the wind should not blow on the earth, nor on the sea, nor on any tree.”

What power is given to the four angels? Cross-reference: 1 Kings 17:1; Malachi 4:5-6; Helaman 10:6-11; Matthew 16:18-19; D&C 110:13-15.

D&C 77:9 Questions Concerning Revelation 7:2

Revelation 7:2 reads as follows: “And I saw another angel ascending from the east, having the seal of the living God: and he cried with a loud voice to the four angels, to whom it was given to hurt the earth and the sea.”

Cross-reference: Bible Dictionary, “Elias;” D&C 110:12.

D&C 77:10 The Sixth Seal

The chapter spoken of in this verse is Revelation 6. The specific verses that mention the sixth seal are verses 12-17. The events described in these verses are things which will occur in our generation. Cross-reference: D&C 45:36-44.

D&C 77:11 The 144,000

The 144,000 people spoken of in this verse are mentioned in Revelation 7:1-8. As you study D&C 77:11, explain the purpose of the 144,000. What are they given power to do? What is their purpose? Does it seem that they will be the only ones who are exalted? Cross-reference: Revelation 14:1-5.

D&C 77:12 The Sounding of the Trumpets

The trumpets spoken of in this verse are mentioned in Revelation 8:2, which reads, “And I saw the seven angels which stood before God; and to them were given seven trumpets.”

What is the purpose of the seven angels with trumpets? What do they symbolize?

D&C 77:13 Questions Concerning Revelation Chapter 9

Revelation 9 speaks of terrible wars and plagues that will be poured out upon the earth. Verse 13A explains when these things will happen.

D&C 77:14 The Little Book that John Ate

The little book spoken of in this verse is mentioned in Revelation 10:10, which reads, “And I took the little book out of the angel’s hand, and ate it up; and it was in my mouth sweet as honey: and as soon as I had eaten it, my belly was bitter.”

Cross-reference: D&C 110:12; 124:58.

D&C 77:15 The Two Witnesses

The two witnesses spoken of in this verse are mentioned in Revelation 11:3-13. Before you read these verses, read verse 15A so that you will understand the significance of the two prophets. The verses read as follows:

3 And I will give power unto my two witnesses, and they shall prophesy a thousand two hundred and threescore days, clothed in sackcloth. [Sack cloth is like burlap. It is a sign of great humility.]
4 These are the two olive trees
[This is a tree associated with peace.], and the two candlesticks [This is a symbol associated with priesthood power.] standing before the God of the earth.
5 And if any man will hurt them, fire proceedeth out of their mouth, and devoureth their enemies: and if any man will hurt them, he must in this manner be killed.
6 These have power to shut heaven, that it rain not in the days of their prophecy
[This is power that we associate with Elijah, see 1 Kings 17:1.]: and have power over waters to turn them to blood, and to smite the earth with all plagues [This is power we associate with Moses.], as often as they will.
7 And when they shall have finished their testimony, the beast
[Satan] that ascendeth out of the bottomless pit [hell] shall make war against them, and shall overcome them, and kill them.
8 And their dead bodies shall lie in the street of the great city
[Jerusalem], which spiritually is called Sodom and Egypt, where also our Lord was crucified.
9 And they of the people and kindreds and tongues and nations shall see their dead bodies three days and an half, and shall not suffer their dead bodies to be put in graves.
10 And they that dwell upon the earth shall rejoice over them, and make merry, and shall send gifts one to another; because these two prophets tormented them that dwelt on the earth.
11 And after three days and an half the Spirit of life from God entered into them, and they stood upon their feet; and great fear fell upon them which saw them.
12 And they heard a great voice from heaven saying unto them, Come up hither. And they ascended up to heaven in a cloud; and their enemies beheld them.
13 And the same hour was there a great earthquake, and the tenth part of the city fell, and in the earthquake were slain of men seven thousand: and the remnant were affrighted, and gave glory to the God of heaven.

Doctrine and Covenants Section 76

Historical Background

In September 1831, Joseph Smith moved his family Kirtland to Hiram, Ohio, so that he might dedicated himself more fully to the revision of the King James Bible. Almost immediately there were interruptions to this effort. First there was the planning and publication of the revelations already received. Then there came false accusations against the Church and its leaders, requiring that missionaries be sent out, and that Joseph himself be involved in preaching the gospel. By February 1832, Joseph Smith and Sidney Rigdon were able to focus on the inspired revision. On the 16th of February, Joseph was inspired to make a revision of John 5:29. The circumstances in which they translated are not fully understood. It appears that there were at least a dozen men in the room in the John Johnson home when Joseph received the vision known as Section 76. Philo Dibble was one of the men in the room. The first known reporting of his experience came 60 years after the event. This is his account:

“Joseph would, at intervals, say: ‘What do I see?’ Then he would relate what he had seen or what he was looking at. Then Sidney replied, ‘I see the same.’ Presently Sidney would say, ‘What do I see?’ and would repeat what they had seen or was seeing, and Joseph would reply, ‘I see the same.’ This manner of conversation was repeated at short intervals to the end of the vision, and during the whole time not a word was spoken by any other person. Not a sound nor motion made by anyone but Joseph and Sidney, and it seemed to me that they never moved a joint or limb during the time I was there, which I think was over an hour, and to the end of the vision. Joseph sat firmly and calmly all the time in the midst of a magnificent glory, but Sidney sat limp and pale, apparently as limber as a rag, observing which Joseph remarked, smilingly, ‘Sidney is not used to it as I am’ (The Juvenile Instructor, 15 May 1892, p. 304).

Brigham Young wrote, “When God revealed to Joseph Smith and Sidney Rigdon that there was a place prepared for all, according to the light they had received and their rejection of evil and practice of good, it was a trial to many, and some apostatized because God was not going to send to everlasting punishment heathens and infants, but had a place of salvation, in due time, for all, and would belss the honest and virtuous and truthful, whether they ever belonged to any church or not” (Journal of Discourses, 16:42).

Joseph Smith declared, “The document is a transcript from the records of the eternal world” (Teachings of the Prophet Joseph Smith, p. 11; February 1832).

He also added, “The rewards of faithfulness, and the punishments for sins, are so much beyond the narrow-mindedness of men, that every man is constrained to exclaim: ‘It came from God’” (Teachings of the Prophet Joseph Smith, p. 11; February 1832).

D&C 76:1-10 A Promise to Those Who Fear God and Serve Him in Righteousness

List the things that are revealed about the Lord and the promises He makes to those who fear Him and serve Him in righteousness.

D&C 76:11-24 The Testimony of Joseph Smith and Sidney Rigdon

Read verses 11-14, 20-24. What is the testimony that Joseph and Sidney bear? What do they say about God the Father and Jesus the Son? According to verses 15-19, what were Joseph and Sidney doing when this vision was shown to them? How can scripture study regular and profound scripture study help you acquire and strengthen your own testimony?

D&C 76:25-49 The Suffering of the Ungodly

According to verses 25-35, how did Lucifer fall? How does he make war with the saints of God? What are the saints who fall called? See verse 32. In verses 36-38, 44-49 we learn of the eternal destiny of those who are called the Sons of Perdition? Why would such a terrible punishment be given to any of God’s spirit children? See verses 40-43. What kind of person would you have to be in order to have the Father reveal the Son to you, to be able to see the Son of God in vision while you are still in mortality? If such a person denies this ever happened, why would the God reject him? See verse 35.

D&C 76:50-70, 92-97 Those Who Inherit the Celestial Kingdom

In verses 50-53 are found the expectations of those who will “come forth in the resurrection of the just” and “whose bodies are celestial.” List the requirements. In verses 54-70, 92-97 there is an extensive list of blessings that will be given to those who meet the requirements. As you look through this list, keep track of how the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit are involved in the lives of these people.

D&C 76:71-80 Those Who Inherit the Terrestrial Kingdom

According to verse 74, how are people who are terrestrial different from people who are celestial? Remember, to “receive” the testimony of Jesus you must have it presented to you. What other differences are there between celestial and terrestrial people? What can you do to help yourself qualify for the celestial kingdom?

D&C 76:81-91, 98-112 Those Who Inherit the Telestial Kingdom

Find the word “glory” in these verses. What do you learn about the glory of the telestial kingdom? According to verses 99-112, what do people do to qualify for the telestial kingdom? What can you do to avoid becoming a part of this kingdom?

D&C 76:113-119 A Promise to Those Who Love God

What promise is made to all who love God and purify themselves before Him?

Doctrine and Covenants Section 75

Historical Background

Several families living in Amherst, Ohio, joined the Church. Arrangements were made for those Saints to have a conference in that city. On the 25th of January, 1831, the meeting took place with at least 24 elders in attendance. As part of this meeting, Joseph Smith was ordained President of the High Priesthood. Those who attended the meeting were anxious to know the will of the Lord for them. As they met, the Lord revealed to Joseph His will concerning these brethren. As the revelation was received, Sidney Rigdon acted as scribe and recorded it in the presence of the men who had come together for the conference. One revelation was given first, consisting of verses 1-22, in which ten men were called to serve in specific parts of the country: the south (William E. McLellan, age 26; Luke S. Johnson, 25; Major N. Ashley, 34; and Burr Riggs, 21), the east (Orson Hyde, 27; Samuel H. Smith, 24; Orson Pratt, 21; and Lyman E. Johnson, 21) and the west (Asa Dodds, 39; and Calves Wilson, ?). Afterward another revelation was received, consisting of verses 23-36, in which fourteen members were called to serve, with no specific location given (Simeon Carter, 38; and Emer Harris, 51; Hyrum Smith, 32; and Reynolds Cahoon, 42; Daniel Stanton, 37; and Seymour Brunson, 33; Sylvester Smith, 27; and Gideon Carter, 34; Ruggles Eames, ?; and Stephen Burnett, 18; and Micah B. Welton, 38; and Eden Smith, 26).

D&C 75:1-5 Go Forth to Proclaim My Gospel

What are the elders called as missionaries called to do? How are they supposed to do it? What will happen if they keep this commandment? Cross-reference: Alma 26:22.

D&C 75:18-22 Leave Your Blessings

Three times in the Doctrine and Covenants (D&C 24:15; 60:15; 75:20) the Lord instructs the elders to “shake off the dust of your feet” when they are not received well by people as they preach. What consequences are promised by the Lord, both to the unreceptive people and to the missionaries, when this happens? What should missionaries do when they are received graciously by people they teach? Why would it be a good idea for missionaries to focus on blessing families rather than cursing them? Cross-reference: D&C 121:45-46.

D&C 75:23-26 Support for the Families

Most of the missionaries who were called in this revelation were mature men with wives and children. They were willing to leave their families to serve. According to these verses, how were their families to be taken care of while they were on their missions?

D&C 75:27-29 Ask and They Shall Receive

What does the Lord expect of the missionaries with families? Notice the words Labor and Idler. What does the Lord say concerning these two words that would be good for us to remember? Cross-reference: D&C 42:42.
