Historical Background
Joseph Smith was working on the inspired revision of the King James Bible. As he did so, new light and new understanding would be revealed to him. In this revelation, Joseph is working on John chapter 1. Using that as a springboard, a flood of doctrinal understanding was revealed. Up until the 1981 edition of the Doctrine and Covenants, the person called John in this revelation was referred to as John the Apostle. Others have felt that the John spoken of was John the Baptist. The most recent edition of the Doctrine and Covenants does not address the identity of the person called John.

Jesus received grace for grace (see D&C 93:12-13). This means he received knowledge and intelligence from God a little at a time “until he received a fulness” (D&C 93:13). What happens to us if we “receive grace for grace”? How do we receive grace for grace? Cross-reference: 2 Nephi 28:29-30.

Dcotrine and Covenants Section 92
Historical Background
In March of 1832, the Lord inspired the Prophet Joseph to create the United Firm. This was to be an organization of members of the Church who would develop businesses whose profits could be used to strengthen the Church financially, and to provide for the poor (see D&C 78:11; 82:11). Prominent leaders of the Church were expected to become part of the United Firm. Sometimes the name of this group is United Order. They appear to be synonymous expressions to the Prophet Joseph. Frederick G. Williams had recently been called as a member of the First Presidency. This revelation directs him to become part of the United Firm.

Scripture becomes scripture because people in authority declare it to be so. Religious leaders for millennia have tried to define what scripture is. There are texts which have become part of the collection defined as scripture. These texts are part of the “canon.” The word canon means “ruler” like a straight-edge device used for making lines that are perfectly straight. Well-intending persons have tried to select texts that are consistent with the doctrine taught by apostles, prophets, and the Savior Himself. When they come across texts that appear questionable in their authorship or origin, they are generally rejected. The Apocrypha is a collection of texts that are rejected by some faiths and accepted by others. For example, the Jewish faith has books that fall under this definition, as do Christians. Currently, there are fifteen additional texts that appear in the Bible used by the Catholic Church that do not appear in other Christian Bibles.
