Offering Thanks to God
In these chapters, Lehi offers thanks to God on four occasions:
1) 1 Nephi 1:14
2) 1 Nephi 2:7
3) 1 Nephi 5:9
4) 1 Nephi 7:22
Invite students to discover why Lehi was thankful. Why do you think he was thankful for these things? What could you thank God for?
Lehi’s Revelations from God
In these chapters, Lehi receives five revelations from God:
1) 1 Nephi 1:6
2) 1 Nephi 1:8-13
3) 1 Nephi 2:1-2
4) 1 Nephi 3:1-4
5) 1 Nephi 7:1-2
Invite students to summarize the content of Lehi’s revelations. Ask students how Lehi and his family were blessed by these revelations. How have you been blessed by revelations given by God to prophets, Church leaders, parents, yourself?
Nephi’s Revelations from God
In these chapters, Nephi receives four revelations from God:
1) 1 Nephi 2:16
2) 1 Nephi 2:19-24
3) 1 Nephi 3:29-30
4) 1 Nephi 4:10-18
Invite students to summarize the content of Nephi’s revelations. Ask students how Nephi was blessed by these revelations. Compare the revelations given to Nephi with the revelations given to Lehi. What principles do these experiences teach us about revelation from God?
The Plates of Brass
Have students read 1 Nephi 5:10-14. What information was contained in the Plates of Brass?
1) The five books of Moses
2) Prophecies from the beginning down to the reign of Zedekiah.
3) Many prophecies of Jeremiah
4) Genealogical information telling Lehi that he was a descendant of Joseph who was sold into Egypt.
Ask students what Lehi was willing to sacrifice to have this information. What was Nephi willing to do to get this information? What makes this information so valuable? What makes the scriptures and family history information valuable to you today?
Scripture Analysis
Have students read 1 Nephi 2:19-24 and replace the pronouns with the appropriate noun. Have students define the words that are italicized. According to these verses, what happens to those who rebel against God?
19 And it came to pass that the Lord spake unto me [Nephi], saying: Blessed art thou, Nephi, because of thy faith, for thou hast sought me [the Lord] diligently [define phrase], with lowliness of heart [define phrase].
20 And inasmuch as [define phrase] ye shall keep my commandments, ye shall prosper [define word], and shall be led to a land of promise; yea, even a land which I [the Lord] have prepared for you [Nephi]; yea, a land which is choice above all other lands.
21 And inasmuch as thy [Nephi’s] brethren shall rebel against thee [Nephi], they [Nephi’s brethren] shall be cut off from the presence of the Lord.
22 And inasmuch as thou [Nephi] shalt keep my [the Lord’s] commandments, thou shalt be made a ruler and a teacher over thy brethren.
23 For behold [pay attention!], in that day that they [Nephi’s brethren] shall rebel against me [the Lord], I will curse them [Nephi’s brethren] even with a sore [define word] curse, and they shall have no power over thy seed [define word] except they [Nephi’s seed] shall rebel against me [the Lord] also.
24 And if it so be that they [Nephi’s seed] rebel against me, they [Nephi’s brethren] shall be a scourge [define word] unto thy [Nephi’s] seed, to stir them [Nephi’s seed] up in the ways of remembrance [define phrase].

I've been doing these shorter lessons with my girls during our early-morning scripture study. It's been great to get more out of the scriptures than just reading one verse at a time. Our little readers can't always remember everything they read, especially with all the big words used in the scriptures, so going through and pointing things out (such as all the times Lehi gave thanks, or pointing out Nephi's revelations) has been an eye-opener to them and has helped them to learn that there's more to it than just big words.
