Mosiah 18:1-7 The Power of Abinadi’s Words

Help students understand that Alma’s conversion came as he listened to the words of Abinadi. Have students read Mosiah 18:1-7 and find things that changed because one man was converted to the Lord. What has happened in your life or your community because one man became converted to the Lord?

Mosiah 18:8-10 The Covenant of Baptism

Alma preached the gospel secretly and baptized in the waters of Mormon.

Have students find the word “willing”. What is the difference between being willing to do something and actually doing something? Discuss the difference between the words “willing,” “desire,” and “covenant,” as they are found in these verses. What words did Alma use to describe the covenant of baptism? Cross-reference: Alma 7:15.

Mosiah 18:18-29 Commanded of God

Invite students to find the word “commanded”. What things did Alma command the people who were in the Church of Christ to do? What happens to people when they keep these commandments?

Mosiah 19:15-29 Prisoners

Remind students what Abinadi prophesied concerning the followers of King Noah (see Mosiah 12:2-8). Have students read Mosiah 19:14-15, 26-29; 21:1-15. Why were these things happening to the people? Didn’t they want to be righteous? Why did God leave them in bondage?

Mosiah 21:32-22:2 Preparation for Deliverance

King Limhi’s people had become prisoners because they did not keep the commandments of God. Look at Mosiah 21:32-22:2 and find words that help us understand that the people were ready to be delivered from bondage. What kinds of bondage do people today experience? How can they show the Lord that they are ready to be delivered?

Mosiah 22:6-9 The Plan of Deliverance

Gideon was a righteous man among the people of King Limhi. He presented a plan. Ask students to read the plan (Mosiah 22:6-9) and give their opinions of the plan. What was good about it? What was risky? Why wasn’t this thought of long before? What does this example teach us about being delivered from bondage today?

Mosiah 22:10-16 Deliverance

Have students read Mosiah 22:10-16 and have them list all the things that happened to make the deliverance of King Limhi’s people possible. Have them consider all the things that had to happen before they were delivered. (repentance, humility, desire) Ask students how they might be delivered from sin, drugs, pornography, or other addictions using the pattern set by King Limhi’s people.
