Historical Background

Jackson County Missouri was 1,000 miles from Kirtland, Ohio. In 1833, communication systems consisted of mail that was carried by men riding horses or perhaps teams of horses pulling stage coaches or some other form of similar transportation. Joseph Smith could not have known the extent of the difficulties being faced by the Saints in Missouri. Section 98 is a response to the understanding that Joseph could only have had by revelation. The Church in Missouri was suffering intense persecution and the members had been asked to leave. This revelation answers the questions Joseph had in response to the difficulties.

Why is the Lord not pleased with the Saints in Kirtland, Ohio? As you examine your own heart, what things would the Lord be pleased with?

D&C 98:23-38 Conditions that Lead to War

Under what circumstances will the Lord justify his people going to war? What steps need to be taken first before people go to war?

D&C 98:39-48 Repentance and Forgiveness

As you read through these verses pay attention to the all forms of the words “repentance,” and “forgiveness.” What important principles are taught by the Lord concerning these words? Remember that the Lord uses the word “enemies” when speaking about these principles. How would your life be different if you treated your enemies the way this revelation suggests?
