Historical Background
Oliver Cowdery was promised he would be able to translate (see D&C 6:25), and was given principles to remember in anticipation of that opportunity (see D&C 8). Yet, when he made the attempt, he was not able to translate. In his disappointment he asked Joseph why he had not been able to do what the Lord had promised. This revelation is the Lord’s answer.
D&C 9:1-6 It Is God’s Wisdom
How does the Lord answer Oliver’s question: “Why could I not translate the plates?” What is there in these verses to explain this situation? When have you wanted to do something and the time was not right? When have you had opportunities pass you by because you were not prepared? How can the Lord’s words to Oliver Cowdery help you understand that the Lord is watching over you?
D&C 9:7-10 Study It Out
What wisdom does the Lord give Oliver Cowdery about translating ancient records by the power of God? What principles should you remember as you try to discover the will of the Lord in all that you are asked to do? What does it mean to “study it out in your mind”? D&C 9:11-14 It Is Not Expedient Now
It is clear from these verses that the need for Oliver to assist Joseph as a translator has passed. What does the Lord tell Oliver in an effort to help him know that his services are still needed to help with the restoration of the gospel? How can these verses help us as we serve in our Church callings?
