Historical Background

When the office of high priest was established in the Church in June 1831, those who held that office were considered to be different from other priesthood holders. They constituted at that time the high priesthood. However, their duties were not clarified immediately. Section 68 is the beginning of the clarification of the duties of this priesthood office, specifically as it pertains to the office of bishop. It is a combination of two revelations. Verses 1-12 were received in the first days of November 1831, and verses 13-35 were received on November 11, 1831. The wording in these verses is similar to that of D&C 107:59-100.

D&C 68:1-12 The Mission of Elders

As you read these verses focus on the power that is given to those who hold the Melchizedek Priesthood who are called upon to proclaim the gospel. List the blessings you have experienced through the power of the priesthood in your life. Why would the restoration of this priesthood be classified as one of the most important blessings of the Restoration of the Gospel. Cross-reference: D&C 128:20-23.

D&C 68:13-24 The Right to the Calling of Bishop

This revelations establishes that more men will be called to the office of bishop. At the time of this revelation there was only one, Edward Partridge. According to these verses, what priesthood office must a man hold in order to be a bishop? Even if he holds the appropriate priesthood office, what steps must be taken before he may serve as a bishop? Even if a person is a literal descendant of Aaron, what must happen before he may serve as a bishop? In the Church today, all bishops are approved by the First Presidency and ordained and set apart by their stake president.

D&C 68:25-28 Instructions to Parents in Zion

In verse 25 the Lord establishes that parents in Zion (the future New Jerusalem) and the stakes in Zion have the same responsibilities. What are those responsibilities?

D&C 68:29-35 Instructions to the Inhabitants of Zion

What things concerned the Lord about the people who were in Zion (the future New Jerusalem)? Why would the Lord expect his people to live a higher law in the place that was to become the New Jerusalem? Cross-reference: Ether 13:2-6.
