Historical Background

Jesse Gause, who had served as a counselor to Joseph Smith, was excommunicated in December 1832. The vacancy was not filled until this revelation was given in March 1833. This revelation shows an evolution in the understanding of the office of the First Presidency. The counselors in the First Presidency are given authority “equal with [Joseph Smith] in holding the keys of this last kingdom” (D&C 90:6). After this revelation was received, Sidney Rigdon and Frederick G. Williams were ordained by the laying on of hands as counselors in the “Presidency of the high Priesthood” on 18 March 1833, in a meeting of the School of the Prophets.

Who are the people the Lord gives specific direction to? What are their duties and callings? Memorize verse 24. In verse 25, the Brethren are cautioned to “let [their] families be small.” In the context of the verse it means that they should be careful not to have too many persons who are not members of their families living in their homes.

Remember that Zion was to be the New Jerusalem. What counsel does the Lord give to those who live in Zion (Independence, Missouri) in anticipation of the day when the Lord would be with them? How can this counsel help us prepare for a similar blessing?
