Historical Background

By the end of August 1831 the First Presidency had been away from Kirtland, Ohio, the headquarters of the Church for about two and a half months. This was the longest time the leaders of the Church had been away from the core membership and problems surfaced. There was dissention and dissatisfaction among the membership. The uneasiness of the membership is addressed by the Lord.

D&C 63:1-6 Hear the Word of the Lord

Verse 6 begins with the word “Wherefore.” It means that because of things you have read in the first five verses of this revelation people should do whatever the Lord says to do in verse 6. In that verse the Lord declares that the wicked should “take heed, and let the rebellious fear and tremble.” According to what the Lord says in verses 1-5. Why should the wicked and rebellious do those things?

D&C 63:7-13 Seeking for Signs

As you read these verses, look for the word “signs.” What does the Lord say about signs and those who want signs and wonders before they believe? What does the Lord mean when he says “signs come by faith?”

D&C 63:14-19 Adultery

What does the Lord declare about the sin of adultery and those who commit this sin? Why is this a particularly damaging sin to the individual who commits it?

D&C 63:20-23 The Mysteries of the Kingdom

What blessings come to those who keep the commandments? Why would it be better to obey willingly rather than be forced to obey?

D&C 63:24-37 Assemble to Zion

As you read through these verses, watch for what the Lord says about obtaining land in Zion (Jackson County, Missouri). What for the promises that are made if they try to obtain the land “by blood.” What is the Lord’s decree to the wicked?

D&C 63:38-48 Send Money to Zion

These verses make reference to money and treasure that should be sent to Zion (Jackson County, Missouri). What direction does the Lord give to the Prophet Joseph to help him know what to do with the money that is collected?

D&C 63:49-54 The Wise and Foolish Virgins

In Matthew 25 the Lord gave his disciples examples of what it would be like before he comes again in glory. One of the examples was the parable of the wise and foolish virgins. What will it be like when the Lord comes again? What blessings will be given to the faithful at that time? What is there in the parable of the wise and foolish virgins that all members of the Church must remember?

D&C 63:55-66 Beware How We Take the Lord’s Name

The Lord tells the Prophet Joseph that there are things that he is not pleased with. What are those things? What should all members of the Church remember about the Lord? According to verse 62, how is it that some take the Lord’s name in vain? Why would it be wise for us to use the Lord’s name only when we have authority to do so?
