Historical Background
Some of the leading priesthood holders of the Church assembled together to discuss and plan the printing of the revelations received by Joseph Smith. Joseph was not quite 26 years old. Others participating in this council were: Oliver Cowdery (age 25), David Whitmer (26), John Whitmer (31), Peter Whitmer, Jr., (22), Sidney Rigdon (38), William E. McLellan (25), Luke Johnson (24), Lyman Johnson (20), and Orson Hyde (26). Some concern was expressed that the language of the revelations did not have a very educated sound to it. Joseph sought the will of the lord on the matter. Section 67 was the Lord’s response. There is a phrase in the revelation inviting the wisest of the men then present to produce something better than what the Lord had revealed through Joseph. Brother McLellan made such an attempt and it was rejected by the council. Joseph wrote, “The Elders and all present that witnesse4d this vain attempt of a man to imitate the language of Jesus Christ, renewed their faith in the fullness of the gospel, and in the truth of the commandments and revelations which the Lord had given to the church through my instrumentality” (Times and Seasons, 5 (15 April 1844):496).
